- ➤ On Jan. 1, 2026, City Commissioner Jeremy Matlow of Gaines Street Pies distributed $25 gift cards to working folks across Leon County, giving out over $10,000 to help ease financial strains after a tough year. Tallahassee Democrat
- ➤ Making Miracles Group Home has opened a new facility in Tallahassee to support unhoused mothers, now serving up to 15 mothers with 3 available spots for those with children under 5. The group will host a fundraising banquet on Jan. 29 at 6 p.m. to help boost staffing. ABC 27

- ➤ Apalachicola Bay reopens today for oyster harvesting until Feb. 28 after a five-year pause; approved commercial permit holders can collect nearly 4,700 bags while recreational permit holders may collect one bag. WCTV
- ➤ United Van Lines’ 2025 study showed Florida did not rank in the top 10 for newcomers and remains a balanced state — nearly equal inbound and outbound migration — while Oregon led with a 65% inbound rate as trends in retirement and jobs shaped population movement. Tallahassee Democrat

- ➤ Local hunter Frank Richardson, one of over 100 who took part in Florida’s first bear hunt since 2015, killed a 170-pound bear in Wakulla County after a week-long pursuit — officials reported 52 kills statewide and expect a full report soon. WCTV
