COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local Salvation Army will launch 2026 programs that collect soap donations and set up hydration stations on college campuses to ease first-year challenges. Volunteers are invited to join the drive—this week aiming for 150 items.  ABC 27
  • Lemondrop, a Leon County nonprofit, is calling for volunteers to stock 20 food assistance shelves with donated baked goods from Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. + 5 p.m. The organization closed its clothing program due to a lack of help and relies on weekly donations for support.  ABC 27

CULTURE NEWS

  • Black History Alliance and New Life United Methodist Church are hosting a Day of Remembrance at 2821 South Monroe Street (three blocks from the Fairgrounds) on Saturday, Jan. 3 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The event will feature local historians, nonprofit groups and youth presentations to honor the Emancipation Proclamation.  Tallahassee Democrat

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting Jan. 1, 2026, Florida will expand ABLE account eligibility from age 26 to 46, allowing over 400,000 more Floridians to save tax-free for disability-related expenses. The new act supports individuals with later-onset conditions and promotes greater financial independence in our community.  Tallahassee Democrat

  • The Flamingo Challenge raised over $100K for the TMH Foundation (supporting breast cancer patients).  WCTV
  • After enhanced tax credits expired on Jan. 1, ACA health insurance premiums are rising 114% in 2026 — over 4.7 million Floridians, including local residents, now face steep cost hikes as lawmakers plan a vote on extending subsidies.  CBS News

SPORTS NEWS

  • FAMU football coach Quinn Gray is planning to rebuild his team using the NCAA Transfer Portal today, eyeing quarterback Isaiah Knowles and addressing losses of key offensive linemen pursuing NFL careers. The recruitment window runs until Jan. 16.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • FSU football saw changes on Jan. 1 when sophomore tight end Landen Thomas stayed with the Seminoles while starting punter Mac Chiumento entered the transfer portal + prompting the team to adjust its lineup for future contests.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • FSU football has hired Taylor Edwards as its new director of football and player acquisition. He will lead player scouting, recruiting, and retention as the transfer portal window opens today (working with coach Mike Norvell and GM John Garrett).  Tallahassee Democrat
  • FSU's top receiver Duce Robinson will return for his senior season rather than enter the NFL Draft after an ACC-leading year with 1,074 yards + six touchdowns. The Seminoles will open on Aug. 29 at Doak Campbell Stadium.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • FSU football’s Ja’Bril Rawls has decided to remain with the Seminoles after planning a move to the transfer portal. He recorded 40 tackles and one interception during his breakout season — keeping him eligible for two more years.  Tallahassee Democrat
