  • A Tallahassee family welcomed daughter Nathalie Avalos at 12:53 a.m. on Jan. 1 at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare — the baby arrived nearly three weeks early and is already loved by her big sister.  WCTV
  • On New Year's Day at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare, parents Lucero and David welcomed baby girl Nathalie at 12:53 a.m. who was born ahead of schedule and weighed 6 pounds, 7.3 ounces; her excited 7-year-old sister Sara greeted her as the family celebrated the new year.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Preet Harsoda, a FSU master’s student who suffered severe burns in the November fire at Social Seminole, died Sunday and his family now asks neighbors to honor his dreams of fighting forest fires, advancing zero waste solutions, and reforming education by sharing his hopeful story.  WCTV

SPORTS NEWS

  • FSU women's basketball fell to Syracuse 82-72 on Jan. 2 (despite a late rally that nearly closed the gap) at the JMA Wireless Dome. The Seminoles will host Virginia on Sunday, Jan. 4 at 2 p.m. at the Donald L. Tucker Center.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • FSU football named Kam Martin as its new running backs coach on Friday, Jan. 2 (per a press release) and promoted wide receivers coach Tim Harris Jr. to co-offensive coordinator in Tallahassee (highlighting a shift in the team’s strategy).  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Today, FAMU coach Charlie Ward makes his SWAC debut as his men's basketball team faces Bethune-Cookman at 3:30 p.m. at Moore Gymnasium in Daytona Beach (the women tip off at 1 p.m.).  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Florida State basketball is hosting No. 6 Duke today at 3:45 p.m. at the Donald L. Tucker Center (the game marks the ACC home opener and the first time head coach Luke Loucjs meets Duke’s Jon Scheyer on the sidelines).  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Florida State football opened its transfer portal Jan. 2 and it will remain open until Jan. 16. The team plans to fill about 20 roster spots with new athletes, targeting quarterback, offensive and defensive lines, and secondary positions (after two players opted out).  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Florida State is hosting NCAA transfer prospects on campus this weekend to fill key positions in football. Defensive lineman John Walker, offensive tackle Bryant Williams, and return specialist Tucker Holloway are among those evaluated, with additional visits expected over the next two weeks.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Florida State and other ACC schools face a change in football free agency as the transfer portal now runs from Jan. 2-16+ Jan. 20-24 for national championship teams, dropping its spring window. Players are expected to explore new opportunities this winter.  Tallahassee Democrat
