COMMUNITY NEWS

  • City officials said the new senior center on Welaunee Boulevard in the Canopy development is on track to open this summer. The 40,000 sqft facility will serve 400 seniors each day with spaces for health, art and fitness.  WCTV
  • DJ Demp started the 29th annual Demp Week on Monday with a week of events celebrating his birthday, art, and local culture. The festivities include a celebrity basketball game on Friday at FAMU Gaither Gym and an Anti Bully Rally on Saturday from Noon-3 p.m.  WCTV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • John Davis began his tenure as FAMU’s Vice President and Director of Athletics on Monday, Jan. 5. The former Florida Lottery Secretary and Florida State football player replaces Angela Suggs with a $250,000 annual salary as he is tasked with growing revenue and elevating the university’s brand.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Florida State University is kicking off its spring semester with Welcome FSU events starting today and running through Friday, Jan. 16. REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • County Commissioner Brian Welch reported that starter-home prices in Tallahassee rose 43% over five years as strict building regulations limit new affordable builds. Realtors say a reduction in red tape may help lower prices if interest rates drop and wages increase.  WCTV

  • Florida State football has restructured its operations by hiring former Director of Scouting John Garrett as its GM to support head coach Mike Norvell's recruiting efforts + he returns to Tallahassee after a two year stint with Manny Diaz and the Duke Blue Devils.  WCTV
  • FSU football leaders met with local media Monday to review plans after a 7-17 record over two seasons. Head coach Mike Norvell, athletic director Michael Alford and General Manager John Garrett said they will restructure the front office, update NIL rules and boost transfer recruitment.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Florida transfer quarterback DJ Lagway left his Jan. 5 visit at FSU on cloud nine after meeting coach Gus Malzahn and staff, noting their genuine approach and impressive facilities. Lagway said he plans to visit additional schools before finalizing his decision.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • FSU women's basketball lost 91-87 to UVA in a double-overtime game on Sunday at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center. Sole Williams scored 28 points as the team stays winless in the ACC & will face Miami on Jan. 11.  Tallahassee Democrat
