EDUCATION NEWS

  • Florida State University researchers at FAMU-FSU College of Engineering in Tallahassee received a $3.9M grant from the Air Force Research Laboratory to study speeds beyond Mach 5, and the funding will buy new equipment + develop advanced computer tools for wind tunnel tests.  Florida State University
  • HCA Florida Capital Hospital has launched a new three-year Internal Medicine Residency Program through a partnership with UCF’s College of Medicine to address a primary care shortage—twelve residents will begin training in July and expand to 36 trainees at full capacity.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Seven Florida State University students are set to live and learn in Washington D.C. through the new FSU DC Study Away Program, where they will gain internships at congressional offices while staying in FSU managed townhomes. HEALTH NEWS

  • FSU's student-led Home Street Medicine Program (serving Leon County's unsheltered individuals) is set to partner with the FSU Family Medicine Residency Program (at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare) to expand on-site care this year. The program will use a $2.5 million federal grant over five years to support training and treatment.  WCTV
  • Pet rescues will team up this Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at 1210 Capital Circle Southeast to offer free vaccines, including three-year rabies shots for $25 + microchips for $10, as well as spay/neuter vouchers. All pets must be leashed or in a carrier.  WCTV
  • The CDC reported a nearly 33% surge in flu cases nationwide, with high activity noted around Tallahassee. Residents are urged to watch for symptoms (fever, cough, body aches) and get vaccinated at local pharmacies.  Tallahassee Democrat

  • Tallahassee Reports has ranked Leon County's top girls cross country runners for the 2025-2026 season. Emma-Claire Tanenbaum led by winning key meets + setting personal records, followed by Kaia Ables, Charlotte Sikes, Chloe Molen, and Madeline Brockmeier.  Tallahassee Reports
  • Florida State volleyball coach Chris Poole stepped down after 18 seasons, finishing his tenure with 405 wins & four ACC titles and 15 NCAA tournament appearances. He will pursue athletics administration while the program prepares to name his successor.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Malik Benson—a former FSU receiver—now leads the Oregon Ducks in receiving this season after transferring from his previous program; he will play in the Peach Bowl on Jan. 9 at 7:30 p.m. in Atlanta.  FSU News
  • Visa challenges have kept 14 Ethiopian runners from competing at the World Athletics Cross Country Championships at Apalachee Regional Park Saturday — the Ethiopian U20 teams lack enough members to score team titles, though senior teams remain eligible.  WCTV
