  • The 31st Annual Phipps Park Holiday Hike will take place on Sunday, Jan. 11 from 10 a.m. to noon at Elinor Klapp-Phipps Park on Miller Landing Road — an event led by the Florida Trail Association to celebrate the park's trail history.  Tallahassee Democrat

CULTURE NEWS

  • Bobby Bowden’s Killearn home, filled with family heirlooms and memorabilia, will go to auction and draw interest from locals and college football fans. The sale will run over multiple days and feature treasured letters + photos from the late coach’s estate.  WCTV
  • The Tallahassee Camellia Society hosts its annual show at the Florida Department of Agriculture’s Doyle Conner Building today from 1-5 p.m. and tomorrow, Jan. 11, from 1-4 p.m. Visitors can see a colorful display of variegated camellias and submit specimens for judging.  Tallahassee Democrat

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The One Big Beautiful Bill Act will change federal student aid for graduate programs starting July 1, limiting loan amounts for non-professional degrees to $20,500 a year and professional degrees to $50,000, prompting concerns from Tallahassee students & local educators over potential impacts on fields like nursing.  FSU News
  • Leon County school board members debated closing or consolidating schools to address declining enrollment and tight budgets, with some arguing that reducing underused facilities could free up funds for teacher pay.   • FSU chemist Yan Zeng received a 2025 Materials Today Rising Star Award for designing sodium-ion batteries that improve clean energy storage for everyday devices—her work with AI and robotics speeds the discovery of new materials at Tallahassee's research labs.  Florida State University

  • Tallahassee is hosting the World Athletics Cross Country Championships today at Apalachee Regional Park – more than 500 athletes from over 60 countries will compete on a redesigned course with obstacles and a fun run for local fans.  Tallahassee Democrat

  • FSU football has secured nine transfer commitments — including quarterback Ashton Daniels — yet still seeks defensive help.
