ECONOMY NEWS

  • Florida’s new unemployment claims increased to 4,000 for the week ending Jan. 3, up from 3,322, & total claims rose to 208,000 according to the U.S. Department of Labor report on Jan. 8.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • The Greater Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce is hosting its Annual Breakfast Meeting at 8 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 15 at the Tucker Civic Center to outline its plan for boosting local business competitiveness and workforce success. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Former Florida High basketball players used their NIL earnings to donate $2500 each for a new scorer's table at their alma mater and the table will be available in Tallahassee on Monday.  WCTV
  • The Leon County School Board is reviewing shifting enrollments and budget pressures as it weighs plans to possibly close or consolidate schools and asks voters to consider renewing the half-penny sales tax for essential upgrades. Chair Marcus Nicolas (District 5) urged careful analysis before any decisions are made.  Tallahassee Democrat

  • Crews repaved colorful crosswalks by W.T. Moore Elementary and Westminster Oaks on Saturday after FDOT safety compliance issues led to the removal of five sidewalks last August; Leon County is now coordinating with FDOT to plan alternative pavement treatments.  ABC 27

HEALTH NEWS

  • Orangetheory Fitness in Tallahassee is offering a membership at $2 per day from Dec. 26 to Saturday, Jan. 31 & the program blends strength training & cardio for all fitness levels with a science-backed workout.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Big Bend Hospice is expanding its services to Jackson, Calhoun, and Gulf counties — a move aiming to bring home-based care to rural families — with a ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. CST at Blountstown Magnolia Square Gazebo Complex.  WCTV

  • Five Iron Golf is an indoor simulator venue offering lessons, club fittings, and over 200 courses while weekday happy hour deals run from 3-6 p.m. Indoor leagues begin Feb. 9 (options suit golfers of every skill level).  Tallahassee Democrat
  • FAMU hosted a SWAC basketball doubleheader on Saturday, Jan. 10 at the Al Lawson Jr. Multipurpose Center — the women’s game started at 4 p.m. and the men’s contest at 6 p.m. Tickets were $25.05 on Ticketmaster and games streamed on the SWAC TV app.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Tallahassee hosted nearly 10,000 fans on Saturday, Jan. 10 at Apalachee Regional Park for the World Cross Country Championships where top runners competed; Australia’s Linden Hull won gold in the mixed relay and several former FSU athletes energized the home crowd.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • FAMU football alums Xavier Smith and Terrell Jennings made their mark in the NFL wild card round—Smith played for the Rams against the Panthers on Saturday at Bank of America Stadium while Jennings is set to play for the Patriots today at Gillette Stadium.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Florida A&M’s women defeated Southern 60-57 and the men won 67-59 in a SWAC doubleheader at the Lawson Center on Saturday, Jan. 10. The wins handed Southern its first conference loss and gave FAMU its first conference victories of the season.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Florida State men's basketball lost 113-69 to NC State on Jan. 10 at the Donald L. Tucker Center. The game marked the Seminoles' worst home loss and saw NC State outrebound FSU and build a large early lead.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Former FAMU quarterback Quinn Gray Sr. has returned as head football coach after guiding Albany State to a SIAC championship. He was hired on Dec. 23 to replace James Colzie III after a 5-7 season and FAMU President Marva Johnson celebrated his homecoming.  FSU News
