CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ On Jan. 15, the city honored Reverend C.K. Steele by unveiling his restored statue at the bus plaza. City officials, family members (including his great-granddaughter) and FSU Master Craftsman Studio marked the event, which celebrated his civil rights legacy. Tallahassee Democrat
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Leon County Schools has boosted its high school graduation rate to 87.9% (up from 85.1% last year) as new programs help students recover credits while the statewide rate reached a record 92.2% earlier this month. Tallahassee Democrat
- ➤ FSU celebrated the grand opening of the new Herbert Wertheim Center for Business Excellence on Tuesday on West Gaines Street through a ribbon-cutting and gift-signing event honoring Dr. Herbert Wertheim’s $65 million contribution; tours of the 218,000 sqft facility preceded classes that began Jan. 7. - ➤ Florida State University will celebrate its 175th anniversary with a cupcake kickoff at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 21 at the Student Union and plans Homecoming festivities on Landis Green in Tallahassee (the celebration continues all year). Florida State University

- ➤ Tallahassee and Leon County offices will be closed on Monday, Jan. 19 for MLK Day as waste collections, transit, and animal services adjust their schedules—residents can also enjoy a downtown parade to honor Dr. King while libraries and community centers update their hours. Tallahassee Democrat
- ➤ On Jan. 15, the Tallahassee City Commission voted to let the city manager negotiate a memorandum of understanding with Florida State University to form FSU Health & expand local healthcare services that may soon benefit the community. WCTV
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ FSU professor Andrea Lobene received a $300,000 USDA grant to study if increasing potassium intake can offset high-sodium diets. Her research will test this method on groups of participants and may offer a new strategy to lower cardiovascular risk. Florida State University

- ➤ FSU football has chosen redshirt senior quarterback Ashton Daniels for the 2026 season after he committed on Jan. 6 following a campus visit on Jan. 5. Daniels transferred from Auburn after playing at Stanford and is expected to lead the rebuild with his dual-threat skills. FSU News
- ➤ Leon boys basketball won 72-64 over FAMU DRS on Thursday night in Tallahassee, moving the Lions to 14-3 while the Baby Rattlers dropped to 8-9. WCTV
- ➤ 8-year-old Aaron Davis, battling leukemia and now in remission, signed a symbolic letter of intent with FSU baseball on Wednesday, Jan. 14 at Dick Howser Stadium. The team’s coaching staff + teammates celebrated his strength and welcomed him into their fold. Tallahassee Democrat
- ➤ Florida State football signed transfer portal linebackers Chris Jones (Southern Miss) and Mikai Gbayor (North Carolina) on Jan. 15; Gbayor reunited with his former coach while Jones, who recorded 133 tackles last season, bolstered the team’s linebacker depth in Tallahassee. Tallahassee Democrat
