COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Big Bend AFTER Reentry Coalition held a resource fair that brought nearly 30 community agencies together to offer housing, job opportunities, mental health services, and family support for those returning from incarceration (and their loved ones). Local leaders said the event paved the way for successful reentry.  ABC 27

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tallahassee will host the 26th annual Chain of Parks Art Festival by Lemoyne Arts, featuring a new brochure by watercolor artist Curtis Whitman. The event is set for April 18 and 19 downtown — expect a lively puppet parade on Saturday and a marching band on Sunday.  WFSU Public Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Darrick D. McGhee Sr. gave the keynote address at FAMU’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Convocation on Friday, Jan. 16 at Lee Hall Auditorium. The FAMU alumnus highlighted the legacy of Dr. King and the role of higher education — urging the community to embrace leadership and purpose.  WCTV
  • FSU students face high airfare during mandatory breaks as airlines use AI-driven pricing for limited flights from Tallahassee International Airport (only two airlines operate), forcing many to take longer bus rides from outlying areas. The trend is expected to persist until flight options improve.  FSU News
  • The Leon County School Board will consider possible school closings and consolidations during an all-day retreat on Monday, Jan. 26 in Tallahassee (declining enrollment and reduced funding prompting the discussion). Board members weighed modest savings against the potential impact on students and the community.  WFSU

  • On Jan. 17, 12-year-old Elie Rosenberg took on the 'Big Ron' burger challenge at Bantam Bay in Quincy as part of her food adventure that gained local social media support. Her next food challenge — the 'Pho King Challenge' at Pho Me — will test her appetite further.  Tallahassee Democrat

SPORTS NEWS

  • Last Saturday, Tallahassee State hosted Gulf Coast State as the men’s and women’s basketball teams played at home, giving local fans a competitive game.  WCTV
  • FAMU men's basketball beat Arkansas-Pine Bluff 71+67 on Saturday while the women's team lost 63+53 after leading at halftime. The men's team will play Mississippi Valley State Monday while the women face Jackson State Thursday.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Florida State softball is counting on nine freshmen to fill the gap left by departing seniors as veteran players guide them. The team will open on Feb. 5 at 6 p.m. against Samford at the Seminole Softball Complex.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • FSU men's basketball lost 69-68 to Wake Forest on Saturday at the Donald L. Tucker Center as 16 turnovers cost the team a late lead. The Seminoles will face a road game at the Wasco Center in Coral Gables on Tuesday at 7 p.m.  Tallahassee Democrat
