COMMUNITY NEWS

  • WFSU promoted Regan McCarthy to News Director after serving as Assignment Editor and Assistant News Director since 2011 (she has led daily newsgathering and internship programs) and will now coordinate local, state and Capitol news production with public radio partners.  WFSU Public Media

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tallahassee celebrated Martin Luther King Day yesterday with a parade along Monroe Street featuring civic groups and marching bands, led by retired physician Dr. A.J. Brickler who spoke on Dr. King’s vision for equality. The celebration continued with a festival on Adams Street and a dialogue session at City Hall.  WFSU
  • The Chain of Parks Art Festival will run Saturday and Sunday, April 18-19 and features watercolorist Curtis Whitwam’s Heart of the Universe (showcasing Tallahassee’s natural beauty) along with live music, theater, art exhibits, and local food in downtown parks, welcoming thousands of visitors.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Last week, LeMoyne Arts hosted Muffins and Mimosas at the historic Meginnis-Munroe House on North Gadsden Street where local artists showcased their work as visitors enjoyed complimentary muffins + mimosas.  FSU News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • FSU professor Mark McNees warns that AI-driven data centers will push energy costs higher as consumers in affected areas could face bills rising to 267%+ due to growing demand. He noted Microsoft plans to pay higher rates to prevent local residents from footing the bill.  Florida State University

EDUCATION NEWS

  • FSView & Florida Flambeau launched its Spanish section to serve FSU's growing Hispanic community and break language barriers. The media translated at least two articles weekly and made them easily available via lists at the bottom of its page.  FSU News
  • Florida State University marks its 175th anniversary by reporting record-high retention and graduation rates and a 50% increase in research funds; it prepares for FSU Day at the Capitol today (supported by a $65 million gift) as it builds on its legacy of educational excellence.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • FSU honored 10 students on Dec. 5 at the Globe Auditorium for earning the Global Citizenship Certificate (GCC), recognizing their dedication to cultural learning and international engagement.  Florida State University

  • Florida Highway Patrol reminds drivers during January's Move Over Month to change lanes or slow down when passing emergency vehicles including tow trucks (the law was expanded last year to cover all roadside stops) to help reduce crashes and save lives.  WCTV

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Florida Department of Health will cut $120 million from the AIDS Drug Assistance Program, limiting access to HIV medication for 10,000 fewer people starting March 1. Over 100 advocates gathered Tuesday at the state Capitol asking for more funds to meet rising costs and reduced federal support.  WCTV

  • FSU basketball stunned Miami 65-63 on Jan. 20 at the Watsco Center when Robert McCray V hit clutch free throws with one second left to break a five-game losing streak; the team will face a Dallas opponent at Moody Coliseum on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 4 p.m.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • FAMU men's basketball defeated Mississippi Valley State on Jan. 20 with a 62-48 score, riding a four-game win streak atop SWAC standings. The Rattlers will face Alcorn State Saturday at Al Lawson Jr. Multipurpose Center (5 p.m. tipoff).  Tallahassee Democrat
  • FSU alumn Brooks Koepka applied to return to the PGA Tour under a new program and will make his first start on Jan. 29 at the Farmers Insurance Open. He will face a $5 million donation requirement and loss of bonus earnings as penalties.  FSU News
