CULTURE NEWS

  • The Wildlife, Heritage, & Outdoors Festival will take place tomorrow at the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge in Wakulla County from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., featuring hands-on activities like fishing, archery & wildlife education.  WFSU Public Media
  • Southern Shakespeare Festival will take place the weekend of Feb. 20 with three free performances of The Tempest and a new Kids Kingdom offering junior shows at 5:30 and vendor activities at 4 p.m. - the event was rescheduled after past March weather issues.  WFSU
  • Foodees Food and Culture Festival brings over 40 food trucks and dozens of crafters to Governor's Square Mall this weekend with free admission and event hours today from 1 to 7 p.m. and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.  Tallahassee Democrat

  • Yesterday, FSU Day at the Capitol celebrated the 175th anniversary by uniting students, alumni & university leaders at the Capitol. Participants conducted advocacy meetings with lawmakers and showcased school pride through vibrant Garnet and Gold displays.  FSU News
  • Florida State University researchers found that some molecules change their electrons when hit by light instead of breaking bonds, which makes reactions less effective. Their study, published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, could lead to faster production in pharmaceuticals.  Florida State University
  • FSU launched its Washington Study Away Program with seven students who now start online classes & internships while living in Capitol Hill townhomes. They gain hands-on experience in politics as a step toward future careers.  FSU News
  • Florida State University's Assistant Dean Dina Vyortkina will lead the Anne's College Technology Sandbox National LEGO Day Workshop on Jan. 28 (from 12-2 p.m.) at the college, where kids will learn how LEGO bricks boost STEM skills and creative problem-solving.  Florida State University

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The National Weather Service in Tallahassee says residents in the Big Bend can expect thunderstorms on Sunday as warm Gulf air moves in. Temperatures will drop to the 40-odd on Sunday night and a hard freeze is forecast for Monday and Tuesday, so residents should monitor updates.  Tallahassee Democrat

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Florida lawmakers are proposing a bill to add more verification requirements for unemployment claimants, including contacting five employers weekly & confirming status every two weeks. The measure passed a Senate committee vote on Jan. 22 amid concerns it may worsen challenges for job seekers.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • The House Education & Employment Committee ended debate over a constitutional amendment that would let students show their religious beliefs in schools on Jan. 22. Lawmakers voiced worry it might limit protections for minority faiths, and if passed, voters will decide its future in November.  Tallahassee Democrat
