COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Tallahassee chapter of Woodmen Life donated $25K to Elder Care Services to help expand and remodel the Meals on Wheels kitchen, which serves seniors. Construction will begin in June to address the growing need from a 500-person waiting list.  WCTV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Florida will raise its minimum wage to $15 per hour on Sept. 30 (the final automatic increase under the Fair Wage amendment), affecting workers and small businesses statewide as annual hikes give way to inflation-based adjustments.  Tallahassee Democrat

  • The Florida Senate unanimously passed Senate Bill 320 to cut school district regulations and streamline tasks like teacher hiring and budget management. The measure now moves to the Florida House for review.  WCTV
  • Florida State University earned its 2026 Carnegie Community Engagement Classification, its third time receiving the honor, after a nine-month self-study that highlighted over 4,452 students recording 226,777 community service hours—reflecting strong local partnerships.  Florida State University

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Tallahassee is bracing for a week of freezing temperatures as a cold front will drop highs into the 40s and lows into the teens Monday and Tuesday nights — residents should prepare for icy roads and the chill throughout the week.  Tallahassee Democrat

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Florida lawmakers are considering bills to lower property insurance costs by rewarding homeowners who remain claim-free and by watching insurer affiliates more closely. The proposals, if passed soon, could ease high premiums across the state.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • City workers found what looked like a casket and bone fragments in Tom Brown Park during routine trail work. State experts and archaeologists are investigating the remains near a historic cemetery to determine their origin — further details will be shared as the probe continues.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Tallahassee and GDOT are sending crews to north Georgia ahead of an expected winter storm. About 100 GDOT employees and 17 city personnel on trucks + equipment will work to prep roads and support power restoration efforts in Marietta this weekend.  WCTV

  • Florida State's women's basketball beat SMU 73-51 on Thursday at Moody Coliseum, led by Jasmine Shavers who scored 22 points (including six 3s). The team will host Georgia Tech tomorrow at the Donald L. Tucker Center.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Godby senior Jaden Staten reached a milestone by scoring his 1,000th career point in a 55-37 win over Florida High on Tuesday, Jan. 23 (he added the 12 points needed with a crucial free throw). The Cougars, now 15-4, will face Rickards in a district showdown Friday.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Florida A&M women’s basketball rallied to win 68-63 over Jackson State on Thursday at the Al Lawson Center, moving its SWAC record to 4-2. They will host Alcorn State today at 4 p.m. — coach Bridgette Gordon praised the win for its heart.  WCTV
  • Florida State women’s lacrosse will debut under first-year head coach Sara Tisdale with an opener against Stetson on Feb. 7 at the Seminole Lacrosse Complex — Tisdale, known for building strong programs, aims to boost the team’s competitiveness.  FSU News
