ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A local church in Havana caught fire early Sunday morning (yesterday) as volunteer fire departments including Concord, Midway Fire and Rescue, Quincy, Gadsden EMS, GCSO, and the State Fire Marshal worked together to contain the blaze.  WCTV

  • Marcus Lemonis, CEO of Bed, Bath & Beyond, will speak at Tallahassee's Power Forward series Tuesday, Jan. 27 at Ruby Diamond Auditorium on FSU's campus. He plans to share his journey and playbook to rebuild the brand and inspire reimagined ventures.  Tallahassee Democrat

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Tallahassee experienced severe storms with gusty winds on Sunday & now faces a hard freeze tonight as temperatures are expected to drop into the 20s through Friday morning, prompting residents to secure outdoor items.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Florida has sent over 185 utility workers to help restore power in parts of Georgia & South Carolina as Winter Storm Fern spreads over 35 states, and Tallahassee braces for its hardest freeze of the year with dangerously low wind chills today.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Nearly 300 native trees were planted on Jan. 24 at the Saint Marks Headwaters Buck Lake Trailhead by 100 volunteers including FAMU science majors as part of Leon County’s Arbor Day observance — the effort supports planned expansion of local greenways under Commissioner David O’Keefe’s guidance.  WFSU Public Media

  • Florida Senate Bill 1464 will allow schools to partner with local food banks to recover cafeteria food and reduce single-use plastics — a measure aimed at improving student health. Sponsored by State Sen. Ana Maria Rodriguez, the bill is moving through the legislature.  WFSU Public Media

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • In December, the median price for existing homes in the Tallahassee MSA rose to $345,000 from November’s $334,500 and was 5.6% higher than in December last year. The market had 305 sales — a 9.3% increase largely driven by Leon County, which handles nearly 90% of all transactions.  Tallahassee Reports
