- ➤ Leon County will kick off Black History Month events at the LeRoy Collins Leon County Public Library System with a reading workshop on Saturday, Feb. 7, a virtual author talk on Thursday, Feb. 12, and an honoring event on Thursday, Feb. 19—offering neighbors a chance to learn and celebrate achievements. - ➤ The Tallahassee Historical Society placed an official historical marker near the J.R. Alford Greenway trailhead at Pedrick Road on January 29 to honor Native American heritage with artifacts dating back 12,000+ years. - ➤ The Florida Board of Governors let state universities choose new performance metrics that will shape funding in 2027; FAMU picked a percentage of graduates completing internships and FSU selected a cost-savings measure + both choices were approved and will be reviewed this year. - ➤ The Florida Board of Governors approved new general education course lists at FSU’s Student Union on Jan. 29 for use in the 2026–27 academic year — ensuring standardized core courses for smoother transfers across state institutions. This move follows recent updates to state law on higher education. FSU News
- ➤ FSU President Richard McCullough told the board on Jan. 29 about plans to build new academic health centers in Panama City and Tallahassee and to acquire Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare; he noted high student retention rates and a 175th-anniversary celebration (marking ongoing progress). - ➤ A report by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services found that Florida still leads the nation with 4.5 million ACA enrollees despite 202,000 fewer buyers in 2026 due to higher premiums and expired tax credits—navigators observed a shift from silver to gold plans for lower monthly costs.
