  • The Junior League of Tallahassee is teaming with Second Harvest to offer Big Bend Bites on Saturday at the old Sears parking lot at Governor's Square Mall. Neighbors will pick up a free food box with meat, produce, dairy & nonperishables beginning at 7 a.m. that will serve 1,000 families.  ABC 27

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Tallahassee firefighters rescued three dogs from a workshop fire on Villamore Avenue on March 11—after a homeowner sustained smoke inhalation while trying to extinguish the blaze; crews controlled the fire in 10 minutes.  Tallahassee Democrat

  • Profiles of 30 honorees for the 2026 Women You Need to Know honors will roll out March 16 in TLH Life; a group photo was taken March 10 at the Historic Capitol steps + the event marks 20 years of recognizing local women’s contributions.  Tallahassee Democrat

  • FSU assistant professor Celia Reddick leads research at the Learning Systems Institute and the Department of Educational Leadership to improve teacher education for displaced students. Her seed grant work and Jacobs CIFAR Research Fellowship support comparative studies in Colombia, Uganda and Germany (showing how education builds dignity and hope).  Florida State University
  • Six FSU alumni contributed to Oscar-nominated films while the FSU College of Motion Picture Arts will host its annual watch party on Sunday at The Moon on E. Lafayette St to support student scholarships & fund future productions; tickets start at $50.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • FAMU-FSU College of Engineering professor Ayyalusamy Ramamoorthy developed a new method that preserves the Alzheimer’s-causing protein C99 in its natural state—helping researchers better study its role in the disease.   • Florida State University College of Social Work is launching the Justice and Health Innovation Research Institute to tackle differences between the justice system and behavioral health, with founding director Tanya Renn leading research and community programs. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Scientists at the Climate Prediction Center issued an El Niño watch on March 12, noting that warming Pacific waters may boost wind shear and lead to fewer hurricanes during the season. Forecasts for hurricane activity will be updated later this month.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Wildfires have spread across Florida since February due to drought and fire suppression, threatening ecosystems and air quality. Tallahassee officials have shared safety tips and urged residents to properly dispose of cigarette butts — a simple measure to protect both people and pets.  FSU News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Florida will restrict which items can be purchased with SNAP benefits starting April 20 by banning candy, soda, and energy drinks. The change comes as officials work to lower a 15 percent error rate and cut extra state costs (measures aimed at improving food programs).  WFSU

  • Madeline Penney overcame injuries to lead TSC's women's basketball team to its first winning season since 2018-19.
