Good morning, Tallahassee. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 15th of March.

CULTURE NEWS

  • A group of 25 women and 5 young women honored in the 25 Women You Need to Know series gathered on a windy March evening and posed for a record-time photo session — their inspiring stories will be featured starting March 16th in TLHLife for the next 30 days in print and online.  Tallahassee Democrat

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Tallahassee earned praise when Area Development magazine named it one of the top metro areas for economic strength for the second year & local officials celebrated a rise in key rankings. The city's overall metro ranking rose to fourth & its prime workforce ranking jumped from 82nd to 13th.  Tallahassee Democrat

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The National Weather Service warned that dangerous storms with strong tornadoes and damaging wind gusts are expected to hit Tallahassee overnight, with some storms arriving as early as midnight or 1 a.m. Sunday & residents are urged to charge weather radios and plan safe areas in their homes since the threat could continue into later morning.  Tallahassee Democrat

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Leon County Sheriff's Office is shifting to an electric fleet — mostly undercover Teslas — to cut gas costs and lower emissions. The transition, which began in 2020, faces budget and inflation challenges as officials plan gradual vehicle purchases.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • On Thursday, a Tallahassee House panel voted 16-1 on a bill to change attorney fee rules when homeowners sue insurers—shifting to a loser pays system that supporters say will restore balance while critics warn it could hurt market stability; the bill must pass two more House panels and face a similar Senate measure before becoming law.  Tallahassee Reports
  • The Children’s Services Council of Leon County will hold its Finance & Budget Committee Meeting on Thursday, March 20, 2025 in Tallahassee to review financial reports for the agency. Officials released the financial data in advance of the meeting.  Tallahassee Reports
  • On March 14th, a divided federal appeals court ruled that Leon County school officials did not shock the conscience when they helped a 13-year-old student—who asked to use a male name and pronouns—without full parental input. The decision dismisses the Littlejohn family's 2021 lawsuit while one judge urged policy changes and another noted that the officials acted with good intent.  WFSU
  • Florida lawmakers are now working on a school safety bill that will boost protections against armed intruders and extend the Guardian program to include daycare facilities; some lawmakers are also debating repealing parts of past reforms on gun laws and red flag procedures. The Senate will hold its first committee hearing on Tuesday at 4 p.m.—this step may set the course for new school safety measures.  ABC 27

SPORTS NEWS

  • FSU's Ta'Niya Latson (who averages 24.9 points per game) was named a semifinalist for the 2025 Jersey Mike's Naismith Trophy Women's College Player of the Year Award on March 13th (making her the fastest player in school history to reach 2,000 career points).  Tallahassee Democrat
  • FSU basketball coach Luke Loucks starts rebuilding the team after a 17-15 season ended with an early ACC tournament loss as the transfer portal opens on March 24.
