Good morning, Tallahassee. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 22nd of March.

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Thursday night, a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle on Capital Circle NW near Hartsfield Road—the driver stayed at the scene as police asked witnesses for information, and the crash followed an earlier incident that left a woman dead this week.  Tallahassee Democrat

EDUCATION NEWS

  • FSU English professor Judith Pascoe got the 2025 Distinguished Scholar Award from the Keats-Shelley Association of America for her work on Romantic-era British writings—she was honored in January in New Orleans at the Modern Language Association meeting and received a $60,000 grant to finish her fifth book about Jane Taylor.  Florida State University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Sen. Joe Gruters sponsored a bill called the Lilly Glaubach Act that would require front license plates and written crash reports for car repairs costing at least $5,000—steps aimed at helping catch hit-and-run drivers. The Senate committee approved the amendment, and if it passes the next review, it will take effect July 1.  Local 10
  • A House budget panel grilled Department of Management Services Secretary Pedro Allende on his hiring of out-of-state workers and his agency’s failure to account for over 2,200 state vehicles purchased for more than $57 million — as lawmakers questioned his progress on updating the payroll system due July 1. Senate lawmakers also approved a bill to cap Florida Veterans’ Hall of Fame nominations, the Department of Citrus launched a pilot for free orange juice at Capitol welcome centers, and Attorney General James Uthmeier sharply criticized Fort Myers officials over their vote on sanctuary policies — prompting calls for tighter government oversight.  Tallahassee Reports
  • City staff will review TMH's proposed board changes that would cut city oversight — the proposal leaves the hospital's $1 lease intact — at the commission meeting on March 26 at 3 p.m. TMH said it does not plan to end its lease or pursue a sale, as it aims to support growth through its partnership with FSU.  Tallahassee Democrat

SPORTS NEWS

  • FSU running back Kam Davis said he uses harsh social media feedback as fuel to work on his game as he prepares for a better season. He is cutting weight and refining his skills in offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn’s system — a change he believes will help the team aim for a national title.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Florida State's new men's basketball coach Luke Loucks has already reshaped the team—he hired assistant coaches Michael Fly and Gerald Gillion and planned a tiered NIL system to guide players in reaching their potential. He will also hire a GM to manage finances and expects roster changes as some players enter the transfer portal.  Tallahassee Democrat
