COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Billy Holder announced a project to build an Army memorial and Vietnam Battle Cross at Tallahassee National Cemetery. He is seeking $10,000 plus community donations to finish the $40,000 project, and the monuments will be installed between April and May.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • More than 700,000 children in Florida live in poverty, and one Tallahassee ZIP, 32304, shows over 40% child poverty according to a Florida Chamber of Commerce report. Local educators note that food bank demand rises after spring break, and community groups will continue to support families.  FOX 49

EDUCATION NEWS

  • State University System leaders approved a three-year extension for FSU President Richard McCullough until 2029 and the $109 million sale of Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare to FSU.   • At the Leon County School Board meeting on March 24, board members approved policy updates on religious observances (including Holocaust Remembrance Day) and changes to classroom instruction effective March 25, set future public hearings on graduation, student progression and NIL, and approved a $7.8 million budget reduction affecting staffing.  Tallahassee Reports
  • FSU physicist Mayly Sanchez has been named to the new DOE Office of Science Advisory Committee that will advise on future research directions; the 20-member panel includes experts from academia, labs, and industry, and her appointment spotlights FSU’s growing influence in national science.  Florida State University

  • Leon County instituted a burn ban that began at 5:00 p.m. Friday and will last until 5:00 p.m. April 3 due to a Red Flag warning from the National Weather Service (Tallahassee).  WCTV
  • TSA wait times at Florida airports were under 15 minutes at most centers but reached 15 to 30 minutes at Fort Lauderdale and Tampa as the ongoing government shutdown + spring break travel increased delays, while Tallahassee International maintained a short line on March 27.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • The Leon County Sheriff's Office will host a reentry career fair for inmates to meet local employers next Wednesday, April 1 at 11:00 a.m. at the Leon County Detention Facility, where companies like CWR Contracting + Servco Pools will offer fresh start opportunities.  ABC 27

HEALTH NEWS

  • FSU trustees and the Board of Governors approved a transfer of city-owned hospital assets to FSU following a March 11 vote by the City Commission. The deal lets Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare continue patient care under a long-term lease & build its academic health system.  Florida State University
