EDUCATION NEWS

  • Wakulla High School's War Eagle band raised enough funds in October, with help from boosters, students, and the school district, to purchase 200 new uniforms. The group bought jackets and bibbers and will add shakos and gauntlets (to complete the look) for the next season.  ABC 27
  • The Florida Board of Governors voted to remove Introduction to Sociology from the required core curriculum so it will now be an elective. The decision came after months of debate over a state-edited textbook and academic freedom concerns among college faculty.  WFSU Public Media
  • A specialized contractor discovered low-level radiation contamination in confined systems at the Dittmer Lab building on March 30 during fall renovations at FSU. The campus has kept the building closed and access limited to trained staff & authorized contractors.  FSU News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Leon County government reported record tourist development tax collections for February at $821,622, which marks a 24% increase over last year + visitors spent $19.6M on lodging as the county gears up for a busy spring tourism season.  Tallahassee Reports
  • Florida will ban SNAP recipients from using benefits to buy soda, energy drinks, candy and prepared desserts starting April 20 to encourage healthier food choices. The USDA approved a two-year waiver that requires tracking food purchases until Dec. 31.  Tallahassee Democrat

SPORTS NEWS

  • Florida State football held its Pro Day on March 27 at FSU in Tallahassee where 17 Seminoles ran drills for NFL scouts from all 32 teams. NFL hopefuls Darrell Jackson and Jerry Wilson led the session ahead of the NFL Draft starting April 23.  FSU News
  • High school baseball & softball teams face a busy schedule from March 30 to April 4 across Big Bend as local teams compete in rival games and cross-county showdowns.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Florida State beat Duke 12-11 in a series at Dick Howser Stadium on March 30, but lost star first baseman Myles Bailey to a season-ending injury (after a sliding incident). The team is now 21-6 and will face Stetson at 6:30 p.m. today in DeLand.  FSU News
