COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Families can join a community Easter egg hunt this weekend in Tallahassee + details on the park location and event time will be released soon.  WCTV
  • The Walker Ford Community Center will host a Community Easter Egg Hunt for children ten and under on Saturday starting at 11 a.m; organizers advise arriving by 10:30 a.m with your own basket for prizes and candy.  WCTV

CULTURE NEWS

  • FSU is hosting a live reenactment of the Declaration of Independence on Westcott Plaza today from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. in celebration of America’s 250th birthday; the event is presented by the Institute for Governance and Civics with Theater with a Mission (featuring a diverse cast).  Tallahassee Democrat

ECONOMY NEWS

  • On April 1, Florida’s gas prices surged nearly 10 cents overnight (with Tallahassee averaging $4.082 per gallon, above the $4.064 national rate) as AAA data shows the state now ranks among the top 10 with the highest prices.  Tallahassee Democrat

EDUCATION NEWS

  • CJ Morales, an accounting student at FSU, leads Beta Theta Pi as chapter president and runs The Abuelos Foundation (a nonprofit serving senior citizens) with strong community impact. He plans to earn his master’s degree and take the CPA exam over the next 18 months.  Florida State University
  • FSU Anne Spencer Daves College received a $500,000 grant from the William R. Kenan Jr. Charitable Trust to fund full scholarships for teachers pursuing an Autism Spectrum Disorder Graduate Certificate. The program will support 75 in-service teachers over the next three years.  Florida State University
  • On March 31, FSU’s Faculty Senate honored alumni, leaders and the police at the Torch Awards held at the Heritage Museum in Dodd Hall; Ed Burr, Liz Cohen and Lee Corso received awards + the police were praised for supporting campus safety.  Florida State University
  • WTXL ABC 27 has compiled a list of summer camps for students of all ages in Big Bend and South Georgia. Programs range from arts and sports to leadership training and run through summer months from late May to August *details vary by camp*.  ABC 27
  • The Leon County Sheriff's Office launched the Safety Star Series at Sabal Palm Elementary today to teach children everyday safety habits through quick animated lessons. New episodes will air weekly (the program may expand to middle schools soon).  ABC 27

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The sheriff’s office connected inmates nearing release with job opportunities (via its inmate transition program) as local employers and training providers met at the detention center to offer workforce development support.  FOX 49

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Local government and business leaders met on Monday, Mar. 30 at The Moon to update on the commercial real estate market. They noted a stable yet bouncy local economy with high demand for housing and retail developments near universities and Midtown (with office vacancies slowing growth).  Tallahassee Reports
