CRIME NEWS

  • Law enforcement officials shut down three illegal casinos in Tallahassee when they conducted Operation Westside with help from the Florida Highway Patrol & Department of Homeland Security Investigations, seizing 401 gambling machines and nearly 92,167 dollars in cash while making five arrests.  Tallahassee Reports

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A U.S. district judge on April 5 temporarily halted Florida’s new immigration law that creates state crimes for undocumented immigrants after ruling it violates federal powers (the law would impose mandatory prison terms). A hearing is set for April 18 to decide if the measure will remain blocked as the legal challenge continues.  WFSU
  • The city's school speed zone enforcement program began on March 31 in two school zones near Ruediger Elementary/RA Middle School and Desoto Trail Elementary on Kerry Forest Pkwy—an action prompted by a one-day traffic study that recorded over 47,000 speeding violations; officials said the move is expected to reduce speeding in school zones in the future.  Tallahassee Reports

  • FSU student Ashton Herndon—an emerging college lifestyle influencer—greets fans on campus near Starbucks as he shares advice on handling college life and grows his following with 79,800 YouTube subscribers and 52,000 Instagram followers.   • FSU junior Kyvon Tatham from Pembroke Pines became ACC champion last month in the men's triple jump with a mark of 15.91 meters — he is now ranked No. 1 in the event — and he studies human development and family sciences while aiming for a national title.  FSU News
