ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Monday, a line of storms produced tornado warnings that began around 11:45 a.m. in Tallahassee—officials reported trees and building damage near Deerlake Middle School while a confirmed twister was spotted near Midway. High school students were brought indoors and schools activated tornado drill procedures, and the National Weather Service kept a tornado watch in effect until 6 p.m.—residents are advised to stay alert for stray showers.  Tallahassee Democrat

CRIME NEWS

  • Reginald Gibson was found guilty on Monday after about one hour of jury discussion for kidnapping and killing Elisa Thompson in November 2018—court will resume on Wednesday to decide his sentence.  WCTV

  • Leon County Schools urged families to register kindergartners as early registration began April 7; officials said parents who enroll a student by May 16 will have a chance to win a two-year Florida Prepaid Scholarship while ensuring adequate staffing for the upcoming school year.  ABC 27
  • FAMU-FSU College of Engineering researchers are using artificial intelligence to detect defects in powder-based 3D printing. The project got over $2.2 million from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research — and it will work with Penn State and HP Inc. to build better tools for advanced manufacturing.  Florida State University

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Forecasts indicate Florida will be the most likely state to have a named storm, hurricane, or major hurricane come within 50 miles this season (92%, 65%, and 35%), and forecasters expect an above-normal 2025 season with 17 named storms and 9 hurricanes.   • Florida State University named longtime officer Jason Trumbower as its new chief of police following a national search; the 26-year FSUPD veteran who served as interim chief since January began his role immediately to lead campus law enforcement and support campus safety in Tallahassee.  Florida State University
  • Three months into 2025, police data shows fewer crimes than in 2024 and officers shut down three illegal casinos in a recent operation.
