CRIME NEWS
- ➤ UF international student Felipe Zapata Velásquez, 27, from Colombia was arrested on March 28 for driving with expired registration and license near the UF football stadium and is now held by ICE at the Krome Detention Center in Miami—he will face potential deportation and his arraignment will be held on April 16 in Gainesville. - ➤ Florida State University recently hosted its second annual Provost’s Showcase of Scholarly Teaching where faculty and teaching assistants shared innovative methods to improve student learning and success. The event featured 32 poster presentations+17 roundtable discussions that provided a platform for exchanging ideas and strengthening classroom practices. Florida State University
- ➤ Florida State University’s College of Law climbed 10 spots to its highest ranking ever and is now No. 38 overall in the U.S. News & World Report survey, with a No. 17 ranking among public law schools—showing strong performance in eight specialties including Environmental and Criminal Law. - ➤ Proposed bills SB 430 and HB 1607 will require Florida schools to have a cardiac emergency response plan that includes CPR training for staff and access to AEDs. Tallahassee advocates and the American Heart Association say the new rules are needed—lawmakers are urged to support the change—so students can get fast help if their heart stops. - ➤ The Florida House has advanced HB 209 to block projects such as golf courses and pickleball courts in state parks after public outcry last year—Rep. John Snyder said the measure will protect the parks' natural resources and historic sites. A Senate version still awaits committee review as legislators work to balance park enhancements with conservation. Tallahassee Democrat
- ➤ A Florida bill to curb deepfakes cleared a Senate committee today and a similar measure passed a House committee yesterday. The bill would require social media platforms to remove altered sexual images within 48 hours—violators face penalties under the Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act. WFLA
- ➤ At the March 26 city commission meeting, Commissioners Matlow and Porter questioned the TPD agreement with ICE signed on March 4 without input from elected officials, saying that it lets officers act as immigration agents while keeping taxpayer costs low. Several public speakers urged canceling the deal and a motion for further review was defeated (3–2 vote). Tallahassee Reports
