COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Saturday, April 12, families in Fort Braden will gather at the new Family Resource Center at the Scout House at the Fort Braden Community Center, established through a partnership between Children's Home Society, Children's Services Council and Leon County. After the ribbon cutting, children can enjoy bounce houses and arts and crafts while parents learn from programs on parenting support + job training + mental health counseling + financial literacy.  Tallahassee Democrat

CRIME NEWS

  • A Tallahassee man was charged with 101 felonies after his home was raided by the Leon County Sheriff's Office Tuesday, and officials ended operations of three illegal casinos in the area. During a March 26 city commission meeting, commissioners questioned the local police decision to work with federal immigration law enforcement.  Tallahassee Reports

  • Tallahassee State College Day was held at the Florida Capitol Complex on April 9, marking the first event of its kind.  WCTV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • FAMU held its annual Day at the Capitol on Wednesday as alumni, faculty, students, and local officials gathered to showcase the university’s role in building a strong workforce and request $55.5 million in legislative funding for academic excellence and student support. Interim President Timothy Beard and Chancellor Ray Rodrigues praised FAMU’s contributions—while the university continued its closed-door search for a new president.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • At Tuesday night's meeting, Leon County commissioners voted 6-1 to pass an ordinance that prohibits physical contact between pedestrians and drivers in medians—aimed at boosting roadway safety and curbing panhandling. Commissioner O'Keefe opposed the measure, saying it could criminalize homelessness and may raise First Amendment concerns.  Tallahassee Democrat

  • Local Tallahassee gardeners are updating their beds to grow vegetables, fruits and herbs such as tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers—helped by rising grocery costs and advice from local experts.   • Florida and Walter Clayton Jr. overcame Houston’s defense Monday night in Tallahassee with a 65-63 win in an NCAA title game as Clayton stopped a game-winning shot — ending Houston’s chance to score.
