COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Volunteers built 50 bunk beds at the Kimley-Horn office parking lot on Saturday, April 11 to provide beds for 100 kids during Sleep in Heavenly Peace's largest bed build as the organization expanded with new hubs in Wakulla and Gadsden counties.  WFSU

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Designer eyewear retailer Warby Parker is set to open its first Tallahassee store soon at Carriage Gate Shopping Center — near Trader Joe's. The shop will offer eye exams and glasses but has not yet announced an opening date.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Le Point Pastry & Bakery, a family business known for Venezuelan pastries, artisan breads and focaccia sandwiches, opens its first store at 414 All Saints St on April 15 (4 p.m. grand opening). Locals can taste its fresh treats and full coffee lineup amid rising interest.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Delta Air Lines will add over 40 nonstop flights and upgrade dozens of routes for college football season, serving fans of Florida, FSU and Miami teams. New service from Gainesville and Tallahassee (starting Sept. 4) will link key gameday destinations later this season.  Tallahassee Democrat

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Florida gas prices fell to an average of $4.016 a gallon last week, but a U.S. Navy blockade of the Strait of Hormuz started yesterday + officials say prices may soon increase after talks with Iran failed. Monroe County saw the highest price at $4.335.  Tallahassee Democrat

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Four FSU students, including Tallahassee's Shiv Patel, have been named 2026 Goldwater Scholars for their promise in STEM research – marking the first time FSU has honored four scholars in one year.  Florida State University

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Florida has seen more hurricanes than any other state, and the Atlantic hurricane season will run from June 1 to Nov. 30. Residents are advised to prepare hurricane kits (with non-perishable food, water and essentials) and check their evacuation zone status ahead of predicted storms.  Tallahassee Democrat

HEALTH NEWS

  • Florida State & Apalachee Center have partnered to combine academic research with health care expertise in a new agreement aimed at improving behavioral health treatment in the region. The initiative is expected to strengthen local mental health care services.  WCTV
  • FSU and the City completed the legal transfer of city-owned hospital assets on Friday, paving the way for an academic health center that will boost research, clinical care and medical education — a key milestone for local health expansion.   • FSU experts say adults in Tallahassee are using the stress toy NeeDoh on office desks to get a moment of calm with a simple squeeze+ nostalgic appeal. Director Brad Schmidt and Professor Cammy Crolic explained that the sensory toy offers a portable way to manage daily stress.  Florida State University

  • Drury Hotels purchased a 2-acre property in downtown Tallahassee (the former Greyhound bus station) on Monday, April 13 for $12 million. The hotel chain may add a second location pending permit approvals.  Tallahassee Democrat

  • FAMU football is banned from postseason play due to a low APR, and other schools may contact players directly despite the closed transfer portal & corrective academic measures are being set. The season will kick off on Aug. 29 with a home game against Albany State.  Tallahassee Democrat
