COMMUNITY NEWS

  • WCTV earned more than 20 statewide awards from the Florida Association of Broadcast Journalists last Saturday — including being named Community Service Station of the Year and receiving honors for political, cultural and investigative reporting.  WCTV

CRIME NEWS

  • Tallahassee Police Department announced Monday afternoon that Patrick Kelly Jr.—an 18-year-old last seen on Jackson Bluff Road on April 5—was found deceased in the Ochlocknee River and the Gadsden County Sheriff’s Office is investigating his death.  Tallahassee Democrat

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Florida State University researchers are developing next-generation technologies in areas such as medicine, weather forecasting, food safety, literacy and emergency management to solve major challenges across Florida — they have introduced rapid tests and improved forecasting techniques while advancing artificial intelligence studies. The university also announced plans to build an acute care hospital in Panama City Beach, which will boost health care access and research in the region.  Florida State University

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Think About Personal Pollution Program will give 25 neighbors a $175 grant to cover the cost of plants and mulch needed to build a rain garden that lowers water runoff. The program, which has already installed 250 rain gardens, will accept applications until May 31.  ABC 27

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Trulieve—a Quincy-based medical marijuana company—gave $19.6 million in cash and $84,417 in kind to the Smart & Safe Florida committee in the first quarter to support a new constitutional amendment for recreational marijuana. The committee already collected 150,804 valid signatures and must get 880,062 to appear on the 2026 ballot.  WFSU
  • City staff said that if new bills pass to cut property taxes, Tallahassee will have to study new ways to fund its police, which has a $75.9 million budget. The city gets $72 million from these taxes and is watching five bills that may cut revenue needed for key services — a change that could hurt local funding.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • On Friday, House Budget Chairman Lawrence McClure sent letters to six state agencies asking for records on state spending—he seeks answers on missing vehicles, high salaries for out-of-state officials and a $10 million Medicaid donation linked to a settlement, with responses due by May 16 as lawmakers work on next year’s budget.  Tallahassee Reports

  • Former FSU runner Stan Linton broke a nearly 40-year-old record at Tallahassee's oldest and fastest 5K race last Saturday by finishing 3.1 miles in 14:34—beating Paul Waldron’s 14:36 set in 1986.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Kez McCorvey, a former Florida State staff member (he helped win the 1993 National Title), was named head football coach at North Florida Christian on Friday and introduced himself to the team on Monday. He said he will build his staff around strong relationships with players to help the team succeed.  WCTV
