COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mattie Mobley, a civil rights leader who took part in the 1956 Tallahassee Bus Boycott, died April 8 at age 111. A viewing will be held Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and a funeral service is set for 1 p.m. Saturday at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church.  Tallahassee Democrat

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Today, Wawa opened its 300th Florida store and third Tallahassee location on Thomasville Road—adding to the city's growing number of convenience store chains. The company plans to open 25 to 30 more stores in the Panhandle in the next decade.  Tallahassee Democrat

CRIME NEWS

  • The Leon County Sheriff's Office arrested an 8th grade student at Cobb Middle School on April 16th—he was found with a mini stun gun and a blue case containing razor blades after he cut a student's backpack.  ABC 27

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tallahassee offers a weekend full of events—Revival with Avis Berry will perform at Monticello Opera House on April 19th at 7:30 p.m., Blue Tavern will host a 3-day Jazz Weekend starting April 18th and continuing on April 19th, and the city will hold two Easter egg hunts as well as an Earth Day Festival on April 19th.  Tallahassee Democrat

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season starts on June 1 and ends on November 30 with forecasts showing Florida likely to face named storms and hurricanes, following a busy 2024 season. Local officials urge residents to prepare by checking evacuation zones and restocking disaster kits (to be ready for major storms).  Tallahassee Democrat

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, former Tallahassee Senator Loranne Ausley was honored with the Chiles Advocacy Award at the Florida Capitol during Children's Week as she continues recovering from a serious bike accident that sent her to the hospital for nearly four months. She was recognized for her decades-long work in early childhood education and disability advocacy.  WFSU
  • On April 16th, the Florida Senate passed a bill on a 27-9 vote that bans local governments from adding fluoride to drinking water—moving the measure to the House for review. Lawmakers will decide if the bill becomes law as debates over dental health benefits continue.  Tallahassee Democrat

SPORTS NEWS

  • Charlie Ward, the former Florida State star and Heisman Trophy winner, is set to replace Patrick Crarey as Florida A&M’s next men’s basketball coach pending board approval on April 16 after Crarey left for Grambling State. Ward led Florida High to a state championship in 2022 — he also played in the NBA.  Tallahassee Democrat
