  • Leon County Sheriff's Office hosted a first responders fun day Saturday to build trust with individuals on the autism spectrum, strengthening community ties.  WCTV
  • Dozens of WWII, Korea and Vietnam veterans joined Tallahassee's 12th annual Honor Flight on Saturday, April 18 to visit memorials and share stories; breakfast (from Chick-Fil-A) and Naval Academy students added warmth to the event.  Tallahassee Democrat

  • Word of South will honor jazz legends Miles Davis and John Coltrane on Sunday, April 26 at the Marriott AC Hotel Ballroom with tributes by Grammy-winning + local artists as part of a literature and music festival running April 24-26 in Cascades Park.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Javacya Elite Chamber Orchestra performs Heritage & Harmony: Global Women of Distinction at St. Peter’s Anglican Cathedral on Thursday, April 23 at 7 p.m., featuring acclaimed artists including soprano Marcia Porter, harpist Noel Wan, and violinist Kinga Augustyn.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Bella Bella, a family-owned restaurant known for its Italian dishes, celebrated 25 years when Leon County Commissioner David O'Keefe presented a proclamation and will host a customer appreciation event in September at its location on E 5th Ave.  Tallahassee Democrat

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hundreds of high school students from the Big Bend area joined the Leon Works Expo at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center on Friday, Apr. 17 plus explored hands-on activities in bricklaying and oyster farming to learn about local career paths.  WFSU Public Media
  • Grassroots Free School continues its recovery two years after May 2024 tornado damage, using community funds ($27,327 raised) and FEMA support to repair its playground equipment. The alternative school re-opened in August on a temporary campus and will host summer camp in June.  Tallahassee Democrat

SPORTS NEWS

  • Florida State baseball rallied late on Sunday to win 6-4 and sweep Notre Dame at Dick Howser Stadium. The team will face a midweek game at University of North Florida in Jacksonville—Tuesday, April 21 at 6 p.m.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • FSU men's basketball beat Kentucky for the transfer commitment of 4-star forward Sebastian Rancik (a native of Slovakia) on Sunday, April 19. He joins four other transfers as the Seminoles strengthen their front court and bolster the nation's eighth-ranked recruiting class.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • FAMU baseball swept Mississippi Valley State in a three-game series at Moore-Kittles Field and will face Bethune-Cookman in a SWAC Championship rematch from Friday, Apr. 24 to Sunday, Apr. 26. The Rattlers remain undefeated in conference series.  Tallahassee Democrat
