COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Capital City Youth Services will open a new resource center in South Tallahassee in six to nine months to provide food, clothing, showers, counseling, and case management for unhoused families. The center, supported by community donations, aims to bring services to neighbors (including numbers of children and moms in vehicles).  ABC 27
  • Griffin Heights is one step closer to a new grocery store when the neighborhood association submits an RFP to manage the location on Alabama and Harlem Streets. The store will open this summer to offer affordable food options for local families.  WCTV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Word of South festival begins Friday, April 24 at Cascades Park in Tallahassee, featuring a ticketed Earth, Wind & Fire concert at Adderley Amphitheater and free music and literary shows through Sunday with indoor events at the AC Marriott Ballroom.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • FSU School of Dance associate professor nia love earned a Guggenheim Fellowship in Choreography for her project Floating Metal: UNDERcurrents in My Father’s Garden — an exhibition will open in August at the FSU Museum of Fine Arts to display her work along with her father’s art.  Florida State University

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The FSU Student Investment Fund ranked in the top 10 among public school funds as of Dec. 31, 2025 and is valued at $11.5 million, offering hands-on experience to students at the Herbert Wertheim College of Business.  Florida State University
  • Leon County approved $7.8M in cuts for the 2026-27 school year that slashed arts and athletics funding by 50% and affected over half of 31,700 students in the county — school officials will adjust budgets to address the change.  Tallahassee Democrat

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • North Florida faces extreme drought that raises wildfire risks and dangerous superfog on roads. Experts say water conservation and planned controlled burns (a natural cycle) will help manage the drought’s impact until rains return.  FSU News

  • Florida's Department of Environmental Protection warned Trulieve after an April 15 inspection revealed permit issues at its Jefferson County grow facility on 1948 Capps Highway; the company has 15 days to respond or face fines up to $15,000 per violation.  Tallahassee Democrat

HEALTH NEWS

  • The American Lung Association’s report found nearly half of U.S. children breathed unhealthy air from data collected from 2022 to 2024. Florida counties avoided worst pollution lists, with the Tallahassee area listed among cleaner regions for ozone & prompting policymakers to improve air quality.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Kim Bibeau's Sweat Therapy Fitness in Midtown will host a music festival Sunday at Bradley's Pond to support Parkinson's patients with physical therapy inspired by boxing.
