CULTURE NEWS

  • Soul musician Lamont Landers will support Alabama Shakes during their Florida tour through the end of the month. He will perform in Tallahassee at the Adderley Amphitheatre at Cascades Park on April 26 (Landers recently addressed online claims about AI-generated vocals).  WFSU Public Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • FSU (a local university) sophomore Shiv Patel was named to the national John Robert Lewis Scholars & Fellows Program (supporting emerging civil rights leaders) and will focus on projects to improve rural healthcare access. The Tallahassee native, a pre-med student, earned this honor while serving in campus health roles.  Florida State University
  • FSU held its inaugural Legacy Tea on April 22 in the Student Union Ballrooms to honor its roots as a women’s college & celebrate modern women leaders with speeches, performances and historic keepsakes.   • Leon County high school seniors attended the Worlds of Work Job Fair on April 23 at Lively Technical College (host) where local employers met students. The county school district, Greater Tallahassee Area Chamber of Commerce, and Career Source Florida hosted the event as graduation nears on May 22.  WFSU
  • FSU’s Askew Student Life Center Instagram post suggested a new $5 fee for movie screenings starting May 1, causing student concern. FSU Student Affairs then clarified there is no plan to charge for films, and any premium fees would come from auxiliary sources (students are invited to submit feedback).  FSU News
  • Florida State University will honor Spanx founder Sara Blakely with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters and have her serve as commencement speaker at two spring ceremonies, one on Friday, May 1 at 7 p.m. and another on Saturday, May 2 at 9 a.m. on campus + celebrating her achievements in business and community service.  Tallahassee Democrat

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • FSU professor Ming Ye received a $2.5 million grant from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to map hidden underwater caves and test water quality at Wakulla Springs (a 30-minute drive from campus) using a new underwater autonomous robot.  Florida State University
  • Tallahassee expects about 15 inches of rain over three months to end the drought, with forecasts warning that a tropical storm might be needed. State officials report burn bans in 40 counties as wildfire risks persist.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • On Wednesday, Apr. 22, 2026, fast-moving wildfires swept through parts of Georgia and northern Florida, forcing over 800 people to evacuate and threatening nearly 1,000 homes as crews struggled in dry, windy conditions.  FOX 49

HEALTH NEWS

  • Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a law that expands the swimming lesson voucher program to let children (1-7) access lessons to reduce drowning, the leading cause of accidental death for kids; the law takes effect July 1 and requires postnatal providers to give drowning prevention materials to parents.  WFSU Public Media
