COMMUNITY NEWS

  • John Howard Baldino, a Best Buddies participant, will soon begin independent living at The Standard—a 265-unit complex on West Virginia Street and MLK downtown—that offers supportive amenities and a strong network for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  WFSU Public Media
  • Tallahassee police joined other Florida law enforcement agencies Monday to honor officers who died in the line of duty during the 44th Annual Law Enforcement Memorial Service. The event recognized the courage of fallen officers and offered support to their families.  FOX 49

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Florida jumped 14 cents overnight to top $4 a gallon on April 28, as AAA reported a sharper rise than the slower national increase. Monroe County registered the highest price at $4.326 while Bay County recorded the lowest, affecting motorists across the state.  Tallahassee Democrat

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Bond Elementary partnered with Sunrise Rotary Club and a local micro-green firm to provide grow kits, allowing second graders to harvest greens Tuesday (fourth and fifth graders will harvest today) as part of a hands-on project to explore healthy food.  ABC 27
  • Florida teachers earned an average of 56,663 dollars, making the state 50th in pay for the third straight year, though starting salaries ranked 19th. Some experts say lower salaries force experienced teachers to leave and urge lawmakers to boost funding + raise pay.  FOX 49
  • FSU entrepreneurship professor Eundeok Kim was named one of 10 global Sustainability Fellows by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. The honor recognizes her leadership in sustainability research and teaching at FSU's Jim Moran College of Entrepreneurship.  Florida State University
  • FSU student entrepreneurs pitched their startup ideas at the Innovation Hub last week as part of the Student Innovators’ Shark Tank competition. Larry Harper won the $1,000 prize with his AI-integrated platform Chapter— a tool to boost student engagement and performance data.  Florida State University
  • 18-year-old Demetria Coley became the youngest FSU College of Nursing graduate today, honoring her late mom + preparing for a career in NICU nursing.  Tallahassee Democrat

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Tallahassee’s Electric and Gas Utility approved a $1m study on renewable energy expansion during an Apr. 15 meeting, moving to evaluate six private vendor proposals for new solar and battery projects, with some systems possibly online as early as 2029 + improved grid reliability.  Tallahassee Reports
  • The Supreme Court rejected Leon County's pronoun appeal, upholding an 11th Circuit ruling. Some parents are disappointed (and a superintendent feels relief).  Tallahassee Democrat

  • FSU football recruiting heats up as spring practices continue today, with six commitments (four from local players) and planned official visits amid ongoing uncertainty over coach Mike Norvell’s future while rivals close in on in-state talent.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Three Big Bend softball players have reached double-digit home runs, with Amanda Thompson posting 11 and both Cylie Long and Parker Stubbs hitting 10 each. Local fans can vote for the top slugger as the season unfolds at St. John Paul II & Wakulla.  Tallahassee Democrat
