BUSINESS NEWS

  • Joann Fabrics closed 20 Florida stores on April 28 — part of a series of closures following its January bankruptcy filing — and said all remaining locations will shut by the end of May due to supply chain and inflation challenges. The retailer is also no longer accepting gift cards or returns after selling its assets nationally.  Tallahassee Democrat

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Florida State University named Jeanette Taylor as the new Vice President for Faculty Development & Advancement. Taylor, who returns from the University of Georgia, will begin on June 2 and lead efforts to support faculty hiring, promotion and growth as she succeeds Janet Kistner.  Florida State University
  • On April 28, 2025, FSU held a reflection event at the Student Union to honor victims following the tragic attack on April 17. University leaders, including President McCullough, praised the quick response of law enforcement and highlighted acts of heroism as a step toward healing within the community—restoring a beloved campus space.  Florida State University

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Brown seaweed called sargassum has appeared on local beaches since March, and experts predict record amounts will arrive this summer as extra water from the Amazon feeds nutrients into the ocean — the rotting seaweed releases a strong odor that can irritate eyes, ears and noses. Those with breathing issues are advised to be cautious around affected shorelines.  Tallahassee Democrat

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Senate Appropriations Chairman Ed Hooper said he hopes formal budget talks with the House will begin later this week — lawmakers are expected to finish the spending package next week before returning to Tallahassee. The House approved a $112.95 billion plan — the Senate proposed $117.36 billion and both chambers may extend the session if needed.  Tallahassee Reports
  • Florida residents who plan to fly or enter federal facilities will need a REAL ID by May 7—new applicants must visit a DMV or tax collector’s office with proper documents. Officials warn that without a qualified ID, travelers may face additional screening and the deadline will not be extended.  Tallahassee Democrat
