COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today is the final day for WCTV’s PBJ PLZ! drive that collects jars of peanut butter and jelly to help hungry children and families in the summer; reporters will be live at the Second Harvest warehouse until 6:30 p.m. and drivers will begin picking up bins next week+ final totals will be shared on May 16.  WCTV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Maestro Yaniv Dinur will lead the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra’s season finale, Ravishing Romanticism, on Saturday, May 3 at 7:30 p.m. at Ruby Diamond Concert Hall—pianist Alexander Korsantia will join him in a performance that wraps up the search for the orchestra’s next Music Director and Conductor.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Anhinga Press will celebrate its 51st anniversary on May 2 from 6-8 p.m. at the Req Room (1208 N. Monroe St.) with readings by local poets including Lynne Knight, who has worked with the press since 1991. The event highlights the press’s long-standing role in publishing quality poetry and supporting local writers.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • On April 12, Record Store Day brought vinyl culture to local shops as Retrofit Records celebrated its 14th event, Real Cool Time Records hosted a record tour for collectors, and Rear View Vintage and Vinyl welcomed early campers at 3 a.m.—each event showed how physical music still connects the community.  FSU News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. DeSantis awarded eight FSU officers—including Police Chief Jason Trumbower who stopped a campus shooter nearly two weeks ago that killed two and injured six—with the Governor's Medal of Heroism. He praised the officers for risking their lives to protect students and staff during the crisis.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Inside the Capitol, lawmakers use on-site childcare that helps them care for their young children—Rep. Fiona McFarland uses this service so she can attend meetings without missing key moments with her daughter. The program, paid for with campaign funds, may serve as a model for other statehouses seeking better support for working parents.  WFSU
  • Starting May 7, all adult travelers need a REAL ID-compliant Florida driver's license or a valid passport to board a flight and enter federal facilities. People whose licenses do not show the gold star must visit a driver's license service center or tax collector's office + bring original papers proving their identity, legal residence, Social Security status and birth date.  Tallahassee Democrat

  • The City of Tallahassee celebrated Adopt a Shelter Pet Day on April 30 and now Tallahassee Animal Services will waive adoption fees on May 3 and 4 at its Animal Service Center—1125 Easterwood Drive—to clear the kennels. Appointments run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. with walk-in hours offered on Saturday and Sunday.  Tallahassee Democrat

  • FAMU men’s golf team won its first SWAC championship on April 16 and earned a 14 seed for the NCAA Tournament; the team will play in the Tallahassee Regional hosted by Florida State starting May 12 & is set to compete against top teams.  Tallahassee Democrat
