CRIME NEWS

  • On Friday night, Tallahassee police responded at about 9:50 p.m. to gunshots in a city-owned park near Railroad Square where a large crowd fled amid rapid fire and a brief fight—bullet casings and one minor injury were found—while no arrests have been made.  Tallahassee Democrat

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Florida lawmakers passed a bill that bans cell phone use throughout the school day in elementary and middle schools and sets up a pilot program in six counties to test a full-day ban in high schools — the House vote was 85-14 and the Senate vote was 26-5 before the bill goes to Gov. Ron DeSantis for approval. The measure also changes how charter schools get funding and eases the conversion of traditional schools.  WFSU Public Media
  • Florida State University held its graduation ceremonies for 8,926 students at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center on May 2-3, marking its largest class yet. Graduates overcame hardships from the events on April 17 and earned advanced degrees in fields such as education, urban planning, and engineering—setting the stage for their future careers.  Florida State University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Florida lawmakers agreed on a budget deal framework that promises the largest tax cut in state history—offering $2.8 billion in tax relief and a permanent sales tax reduction while being below the governor’s $115.6 billion plan. The session will extend until June 6 and lawmakers will return May 12 after breaks this weekend and next week.  Local 10
  • Gov. Ron DeSantis lost support in his second-to-last legislative session as lawmakers rejected his proposals on immigration, a $115.6 billion budget, and condo relief measures — forcing the session to extend until early June so they can finalize a budget before July 1. Lawmakers also probed a key initiative linked to the first lady — a move that has raised new questions about the governor’s influence in state affairs.  The Independent

SPORTS NEWS

  • Florida State’s baseball game against Clemson was suspended in the 8th due to lightning and rain in Tallahassee—Clemson leads 4-3. The suspended game will resume at 1 p.m. today and game three will start 45 minutes later as FSU maintains its series lead after an extra innings win in game one.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Florida A&M’s Rattlers won a hard-fought series against Alabama A&M on Saturday afternoon at Moore-Kittles Field — both teams traded strong pitching in a tight duel.  WCTV
  • Freshman pitcher Jazzy Francik threw her first no-hitter on Saturday as she led No. 9 FSU softball to an 8-0 win over No. 15 Virginia Tech. The team will complete its series sweep today at 4 p.m. at Tech Softball Park in Blacksburg.  Tallahassee Democrat
