- ➤ On May 3, police said a burglary at the 300 block of Meadowbrook Lane turned violent when suspect Shawn Calloway, 27, was fatally stabbed by a resident who fought back with a knife—evidence shows Calloway may have been under the influence and that he and the victim did not know each other. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ UF announced that Santa Ono, who has led the University of Michigan since 2022 and previously headed universities in Cincinnati and British Columbia, is the sole finalist to be UF president after former President Ben Sasse resigned. Ono will visit Gainesville today for forums with students, faculty, and administrators—pending approval from the UF Board of Trustees and the state university system’s Board of Governors. - ➤ Tallahassee lawmakers approved the Keith Davis Family Protection Act to repeal a 35-year-old law that stopped families from suing over deadly medical mistakes—critics had called it the free kill law. The bill now heads to the Governor for final approval. ABC 27
- ➤ House Speaker Daniel Perez and Senate President Ben Albritton reached an agreement on a framework for the fiscal 2025-2026 budget that includes $2.8 billion in tax cuts and a plan to lower the state sales tax from 6%—lawmakers will reconvene the week of May 12 to negotiate details before the fiscal year starts on July 1. - ➤ During the May 8th Blueprint Intergovernmental Agency budget workshop, elected officials will consider a proposal to fund TLH air service incentives at $670,000 a year starting in 2026 to address high fares and the loss of JetBlue service—if approved, the plan will cost $3,350,000 over five years and is expected to create an economic impact of $1.1 billion with 1,158 jobs generated.
