CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Today the Shakespeare in the Park Festival opens at Cascades Park with the play 'Henry IV, Part 1' starring British actor Wil Johnson and will run through May 11th with shows at 7:30 p.m. each night—if rain is expected, performances will move indoors to the Maguire Center Westminster Oaks with seating on a first come, first serve basis. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Leon County Schools announced a $6 million increase to the 2025-26 staffing budget to cover raises and benefit increases as the district works to retain educators amid lower enrollment and rising costs; elementary schools will receive $106 million while decisions on administrative positions will come after final budget recommendations this summer. - ➤ Florida State University student Nethraja Kandula led an NSF I-Corps team to develop a quick test for germs in food in professor Prashant Singh's lab — the test can help smaller food processors — and the team finished a six week training program and will soon apply for a national program that may give up to $50,000 in funds. - ➤ FSU meteorology sophomore Matthew Azuara has been awarded the Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship from NOAA for his research on how agricultural burning affects air quality. The scholarship includes financial support, travel expenses and a 10-week paid internship at a NOAA facility next summer — a key opportunity for his career in atmospheric and environmental science. - ➤ NOAA set Hurricane Preparedness Week from May 4-10 to give daily tips on how to know risks and get ready for storms—helping residents prepare before hurricane season starts.
