  • Second Harvest started its PBJ PLZ! Pick Up Blitz Tuesday— collecting peanut butter and jelly jars from nearly 50 local schools to help feed children during the summer. The donations will be weighed at the warehouse, with the final amount revealed live on Thursday, May 14.  WCTV

  • The Chamber of Commerce announced Philip Browning as its new Director of Business Development. He will focus on expanding local business opportunities & forging strategic partnerships in Tallahassee.  Tallahassee Reports

EDUCATION NEWS

  • FAMU’s School of Business and Industry will fund student scholarships thanks to combined gifts of $300K, which include a $100K donation from alumnus Omar Goff — matched by Mielle co-founders and TIAA CEO Thasunda Brown Duckett — announced during the spring commencement at the Lawson Center.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Traveling art teacher Tara Whichello brings art lessons into dining room classrooms today as families seek alternatives to traditional schooling, charging $50 per student per hour + she will continue offering summer lessons after the school year ends.  Tallahassee Democrat

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Hurricane Preparedness Week runs through May 9 and today NOAA urges residents to enable Wireless Emergency Alerts to receive storm warnings — a free tool available on all phones — as local officials advise staying sheltered during severe wind and water events before hurricane season begins June 1.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • A tornado watch was in effect yesterday as a cold front brought possible severe storms and damaging winds to Tallahassee (the National Weather Service noted that intermittent rain and on-off thunderstorms may continue through the weekend).  Tallahassee Democrat

  • A Florida court ordered a C-section (against her wishes) for Brianna Bennett at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare on May 7, sparking questions about when hospitals and courts override patient choices.  Tallahassee Democrat

  • Mother's Day weekend brings a lineup of local events including the Tallahassee Ballet's modern performance of Coppiélia at Ruby Diamond Concert Hall (Sat, May 9), a spring pottery market, and music festivals at Palaver Tree Theater and Railroad Square. REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • TalisTrails, a master-planned community in northeast Tallahassee, is beginning site work with crews clearing 900 acres for 1,500 homes. Home construction will start in about 12 months after permitting delays, with DR Horton + Premier Homes leading Phase I, while future plans include apartments, commercial space and a business park.  Tallahassee Democrat

  • Lincoln High School’s baseball team upset top seeded Chiles by clinching the semifinal series on May 5 + advanced to face Niceville in the regional finals on May 7.  Tallahassee Reports
  • FSU junior shortstop Isa Torres built a historic season with an NCAA record of 16 consecutive hits and a flawless fielding percentage, and she remains a top contender for national player of the year. Her performance could redefine the program's legacy.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Florida State softball edged Georgia Tech 2-1 in the ACC quarterfinals and will face the winner of the Louisville-Stanford matchup today at 1 p.m. at Palmer Park — the winning run was scored in the fifth inning after Bella Ruggerio was hit by a pitch.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Florida A&M captured a 3-2 win over Texas Southern on Thursday, May 7 at Gulfport Sportsplex to secure its third straight SWAC championship game appearance. Today the Rattlers will play the elimination game winner between Southern and Texas Southern at 11:30 a.m., with the championship starting at 3:30 p.m.  Tallahassee Democrat
