COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Orange-Meridian Park broke ground on May 8—creating a new social hub on Tallahassee’s south side near the under-construction Southside Transit Center. The $3.7 million park will offer a shaded children’s play area, fitness area, restrooms, picnic spaces and fruit trees—expected to be completed in early 2026.  Tallahassee Democrat

CULTURE NEWS

  • Yaniv Dinur, the final candidate for the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra conductor job, impressed the audience with his light touch—letting the musicians and music lead—at the May 3 season finale. The program featured works by Boulanger, Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky and earned the orchestra a standing ovation.  Tallahassee Democrat

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, Florida lawmakers finished most of the work in the 2025 legislative session by passing bills on ballot initiatives, condo safety, fluoride, schools, and state parks — and they plan to return next week to finish the budget and address rural development and other priorities.  Tallahassee Reports
  • Elected officials approved $670,000 in annual taxpayer funding today to give airlines an incentive to begin service at Tallahassee International Airport.  WCTV

HEALTH NEWS

  • During Hurricane Preparedness Week from May 4-10, May 8 focused on how to stay safe during storms by advising residents to avoid travel, flooded areas, and driving through floodwaters—rain and storm surge cause more direct deaths than wind. NOAA urged residents to rely on weather alerts and follow local evacuation orders to protect themselves.  Tallahassee Democrat

  • Florida State softball shut out Georgia Tech with an 8 to 0 walk-off victory in the quarterfinals of the ACC tournament to advance to the semifinals at Harrington Athletics Village.
