COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Thursday, Jersey Mike’s Subs donated $35,965.33 to First Tee – Tallahassee after its 15th Annual Month of Giving campaign to support youth golf programs. The donation, led by local figures — Angelo Crowell and Kimberly Crowell — will fund programs that help kids build life skills in the Big Bend area.  Tallahassee Reports

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Yesterday, NOAA warned that nearly half of hurricane fatalities occur after a storm — urging residents to only return home when local officials say it is safe, avoid walking in floodwaters, and use generators only outdoors — while advising caution due to hidden hazards. The National Hurricane Center will begin daily tropical outlooks on May 15, and forecasters expect a volatile hurricane season that starts on June 1.  Tallahassee Democrat

HEALTH NEWS

  • In March, Tallahassee Memorial Hospital asked the city for a plan to create a new board and regional brand to serve more people—Florida State University has shown interest in turning the hospital into an academic health center. City leaders are now weighing a potential sale of hospital assets to boost local healthcare and growth—officials and hospital leaders are set to work out the details.  Tallahassee Reports
  • Two Florida State University doctoral students—Leila Khalili from the Nutrition and Food Science program and Emily Shiel from the College of Medicine—have been awarded American Heart Association Predoctoral Fellowships. The two-year awards provide nearly $70,000 to support their research on cardiovascular health and genetic heart diseases.  Florida State University
  • Dale Neely, a healthcare leader with over 20 years of experience, has been named CEO at HCA Florida Capital Hospital and will oversee the 288-bed hospital and its outpatient centers in Leon and Gadsden counties. He replaces Chris Mosley, who left in February after less than two years on the job.  Tallahassee Democrat

  • Florida State faced Duke in the ACC tournament semifinals on May 9 at 10 a.m. after a weather delay moved the start from 1 p.m.—the winner will face Virginia Tech or Clemson in the championship round on Saturday.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • FSU men's golf senior Patrick McCann—a Tallahassee native—talked about the NCAA regional tournament in a recent video discussion. He said his team worked hard and plans to perform well in the upcoming event.  Tallahassee Democrat
