  • Elder Care Services of the Big Bend will host the Best Friends Bistro luncheon on Thursday, May 14, at 11 a.m. at the Goodwood Museum Carriage House to help seniors with dementia reconnect with the community.  WCTV

  • PGA Hall of Famer Dennis Walters returned Monday to Southwood Golf Club to share his inspiring story of perseverance after a life-changing golf cart accident — he motivated local youth and others to chase their dreams despite setbacks.  ABC 27

EDUCATION NEWS

  • FAMU’s Board of Trustees formed a special committee to boost FAMU DRS grade from C to A. The group will meet 4 p.m. today (via Zoom) to review student performance, recruitment, and funding strategies at the Orange Avenue campus.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • FAMU graduate Oloyede ended his school year by signing a big brand deal and performing with the cast of ‘Sinners’ at the Oscars ceremony after breaking barriers with his band last year.  WCTV
  • The Leon County School Board is reviewing contracts with Caissa K-12 to recover lost students & TPG Cultural Exchange to recruit international teachers while also considering a property tax measure to boost teacher pay & school programs amid budget pressures.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Florida lawmakers return to Tallahassee tomorrow for a special session to finalize a state budget that may leave major school projects unfunded. Proposals include over $50 million for Wakulla High School, $26 million for a new K-8 campus, and nearly $92 million for the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering.  FOX 49
  • Florida schools are nearing the end of the 2025-2026 year with Leon County students set to finish on May 22 and most returning on Aug. 10; other counties will close between May 21 and June 4.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • FSU and FAMU-FSU researchers found that a new qubit made by trapping electrons on solid neon is up to 10,000 times less noisy than traditional designs+ it remains stable at higher temperatures, a breakthrough that could pave the way for robust quantum devices in our growing hub.  Florida State University

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Private and state crews in Lafayette County are battling the South Canal wildfire that burned 2,200 acres and is 59% contained (with 138 firefighters working) as light winds may bring smoke into Branford and Midway and affect drivers along the US-27 and State Road-20 corridor.  WCTV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tallahassee officials are offering free hurricane preparedness workshops to help families get ready for the season starting June 1. The Tuesday sessions begin today at ALARM International Church + continue on May 26 at Jake Gaither Community Center and June 16 at St. Peter’s, each featuring a youth program.  FOX 49
  • Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Florida will offer an extended red snapper fishing season in 2026 with 140 Gulf days and 39 Atlantic days starting May 22, under a state-driven management plan (approved by the feds) to boost angler access and coastal economies.  FOX 49
