CRIME NEWS

  • State Attorney Jack Campbell said he will file paperwork in the coming days to seek the death penalty for Phoenix Ikner, a 20-year-old indicted on two first-degree murder charges and seven counts of attempted first-degree murder after he opened fire on FSU’s campus near the Student Union—which left two dead and seven injured—and made his first court appearance earlier this week where he was denied bond and ordered no contact with victims or witnesses.  WCTV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Florida A&M University held its final round of interviews yesterday with four candidates for its next president—Donald Palm, Marva Johnson, Gerald Hector and Rondall Allen. The FAMU Board of Trustees will choose the new leader on Friday.  WCTV
  • Raphael Vazquez, a local McDonald’s franchise owner, was appointed as a new FAMU trustee by the Florida Board of Governors after Earnie Ellison resigned in May, restoring the board to 13 members so it can vote on a new president at 9 a.m. today. Vazquez, who sponsors FAMU scholarships and hires graduates, fills a key role during the university’s leadership transition.  Tallahassee Democrat

  • FSU softball coach Lonni Alameda continues her weekly breast cancer treatment with a pathology report of 9-of-12 and says her team and fans give her strength—she raised over $15,000 for Tallahassee Memorial Hospital with her pink ribbon logo—and she will lead FSU in its game against Robert Morris at 2:30 p.m. today at the Seminole Softball Complex.  Tallahassee Democrat
