COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Jefferson County farmer Earnest Fulford (co-owner of Fulford Farms) survived a near-fatal fall in 2018 and is urging stronger farm safety measures with Farm Bureau Safety Day on May 22. The event will feature safety demonstrations to help farmers and first responders avoid future accidents.  ABC 27
  • The first day of the 14th annual Stand Down event at the Al Lawson Center offered outreach for veterans, and today free health screenings & legal help and other services run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to support local veterans.  Tallahassee Democrat

  • Capital City Bank has added business banker Willie Correa to serve business owners in the Tallahassee region. With over 20 years in local banking and community work, he will operate from the Bradfordville Road Office at 6691 Thomasville Road + strengthen local growth.  Tallahassee Reports

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gov. DeSantis may sign Senate Bill 538 that requires non-traditional student-athletes to play for high schools in their resident county and will take effect July 1. The rule may slow transfers and prompt roster moves among powerhouse teams.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Bethel Christian Boys Academy held its second annual STEM and Health Fair on Thursday in Northwest Tallahassee, where students engaged with local STEM and healthcare professionals in hands-on activities. Organizers said they plan to expand the event with more community partners next year — addressing workforce shortages in Florida.  ABC 27
  • Leon County Schools is considering hiring student recruitment firm Caissa K12 to boost enrollment amid rising competition from private and homeschool programs. No decision has been made yet regarding the performance-based contract.  WCTV
  • Leon County Schools will recruit teachers from TPG Cultural Exchange (using the federal J-1 Visa) to fill staffing gaps in special education, STEM, English language learning and elementary education. Superintendent Rocky Hanna said contracts will be finalized by end of May so new hires start in summer.  WCTV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • During a Tuesday downpour, volunteers on St. George Island discovered the first sea turtle nest of 2026. Rebranded Sea Turtle Patrol is now an independent non-profit working with a local professor and Franklin County Schools to help kids learn to protect nesting beaches by keeping them clean, flat, and dark.  WCTV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a law on Friday, May 15 that lets Florida colleges and universities opt into a guardian program to arm trained staff and requires new safety measures (including threat-management teams and mental health training) for improved campus safety.  Tallahassee Democrat

SPORTS NEWS

  • FAMU softball played its first NCAA Tournament game since 2017 against the No. 6 seed Florida Gators at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium in Gainesville on Friday, May 15 (the regional contest was double-elimination and set the stage for Saturday’s matchup).  Tallahassee Democrat
  • FSU softball will face elimination against Jacksonville State today at 2:30 p.m. at JoAnne Graf Field — the team seeks a rebound after an upset loss to Stetson in the regional.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Lincoln High School’s baseball team beat Niceville 9 to 2 on May 9 to clinch the regional final series and will face Mater Academy Charter School in the state semifinals on May 18.  Tallahassee Reports
