COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Leon County first responders hosted the third annual Public Safety Summer Kickoff at the North Florida Fairgrounds on Saturday, where dozens of families enjoyed food, games, & activities while interacting with local public safety agencies to promote community trust.  WCTV
  • Florida A&M University’s Lawson Center held Tallahassee’s 14th Veterans’ Stand Down on May 15—16, offering free resources to over 200 local veterans while numbers needing help dropped from 400 to 100. Founder Washington Sanchez said younger veterans are less inclined to accept help.  WFSU

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Saturday, May 16, a Black History walk took place at Speed/Spencer/Stephens Park near Florida A&M to kick off Florida Emancipation Day observance + re-enactors shared heritage stories and a reading of the Emancipation Proclamation will conclude festivities on Wednesday at the Knott House downtown.  WFSU
  • Goodwood Museum & Gardens (1600 Miccosukee Road) will host free guided tours, The Invisible Lives of Goodwood, on Wednesday, May 20, to share the histories of Susan Coles, Lucy Carter, Emily Hall, and Henriatta Williams. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Godby High School is testing a new AI gun detection system that uses its cameras + drones to quickly alert responders when a gun is spotted. The technology, installed on May 17, 2026, aims to boost campus safety in seconds.  WFSU Public Media
  • Florida State and FAMU have seen an increase in out-of-state and international applications even as tuition for non-residents will rise 15% this fall; FSU received over 6,000 more applications than last year while FAMU noted record interest and classes for both schools start on Aug. 24.  Tallahassee Democrat

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Leon County Superintendent Rocky Hanna is campaigning today to renew a half‐penny sales tax that funds school renovations and maintenance, with nearly $30 million in annual revenue expected to help avoid a $621 million deficit. His campaign launches with a fundraising event on Tuesday, May 26 in Leon County.  Tallahassee Democrat

  • The UCF Knights won the Tallahassee Regional final by beating Florida State 4+2 on May 17 at JoAnne Graf Field, ending the Seminoles' season.  FSU News
  • Florida A&M's baseball team defeated Texas Southern 9-8 in a 16-inning contest that lasted 5-and-a-half hours on Saturday, completing its season sweep.  WCTV
