  • Jefferson County will mark Emancipation Day tomorrow at Old Howard Academy in Monticello, where locals gather for fellowship+ traditional treats like jelly cakes+ tea cakes+ lemonade to honor the 1865 proclamation that ended slavery in Florida.  ABC 27

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Tallahassee's oldest Red Lobster on North Monroe Street (a local landmark) has served the community for 56 years and will close permanently on Sunday, May 24 as its parent chain continues cost-cutting measures after exiting bankruptcy in September 2024.  Tallahassee Democrat

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local leaders and community members gathered at African American cemeteries to honor enslaved and formerly enslaved persons as Emancipation Day prompts reflection this week; one site is Houstoun Plantation Cemetery (located on a golf course) where research identified unmarked graves, reminding us of the deep history that shapes Tallahassee.  FOX 49
  • FSU Student Union hosts The Voices Project, a 7-foot art installation featuring survivor stories & QR codes that play recordings from Lauren’s Kids’ Walk in My Shoes journey. The immersive project was built by FSU’s Master Craftsman Studio & runs through May 31.  Florida State University

  • FSU history graduates Chase Panish and Flora Domitrovic won the Historic Preservation Scholar Award from the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation for their projects on Tallahassee’s Union Bank nomination and early computerized city planning, respectively. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • El Niño is expected to boost wind shear in the Atlantic—lowering tropical storm numbers during hurricane season starting June 1—and experts stress residents must still prepare as even one hurricane could impact Florida, with NOAA set to update forecasts later this week.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • FSU scientists in Tallahassee are testing a way to turn drifting sargassum into a useful food ingredient. They extract sodium alginate—used in salad dressings and desserts—from the seaweed to offer a sustainable solution as blooms reach record levels.  Florida State University

  • In Northwest Tallahassee, organizers of the flea market received a 12-hour notice to meet tent permit requirements or face a $250-per-day fine, leaving vendors worried about losing their key income source. City officials say the concerns are overblown while the dispute continues.  ABC 27

HEALTH NEWS

  • Tick season in Florida is predicted to be one of the worst in decades, with CDC data showing tick bite ER visits at their highest since 2017. Experts advise swift tick removal (within 24 hours) and proper yard care to help reduce the risk of Lyme disease.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Brad Schmidt, director of FSU’s Anxiety and Behavioral Health Clinic, explains that high-functioning anxiety means hiding constant worry behind outward success during Mental Health Awareness Month.
