CRIME NEWS

  • A tip about an Instagram video threatening a mass shooting led the Leon County Sheriff’s Office to arrest a Rickards High student—he is held at the Juvenile Assessment Center.  WFSU
  • A 5-year-old girl was found unresponsive at her home on May 19 and was later pronounced dead at Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare; police said foul play is suspected and her mother and stepfather are facing charges for aggravated child abuse and related offenses.  ABC 27

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Superintendent Hanna recommended new principals for next school year while Leon County’s April job report showed unemployment fell to 3.5% as fewer people looked for work—Leon County is asking for candidates for its Children’s Services Council. The North Florida Christian softball team beat University Christian on May 15 and played Evangelical Christian on May 20, and Gov. DeSantis signed a law to lower boaters’ inspections while a law on undocumented immigrants remains blocked by court review.  Tallahassee Reports
  • HB 113 will increase penalties for speeding away or fleeing police and change the point system for sentences, including removing the requirement for law enforcement vehicles to show their insignia (a key change). The bill, inspired by Trooper Zachary Fink’s death in a Feb 2024 high-speed chase, will go into effect on Oct 1 if signed by Gov. DeSantis.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Attorneys for the Florida Immigrant Coalition, Farmworker Association of Florida and others argued in a filing Friday at a federal appeals court that the law targeting undocumented immigrants must remain blocked—citing federal authority over immigration while Attorney General Uthmeier seeks a stay to let the law be enforced as the case continues.  Tallahassee Reports
  • Gov. Ron DeSantis signed Florida’s new Boater Freedom Act that stops officers from pulling over boats solely for safety or sanitation checks unless they have probable cause — the law requires a Florida Freedom Boater decal for registration and will take effect on July 1.  Tallahassee Democrat

SPORTS NEWS

  • Florida State softball's starting shortstop Isa Torres was named Softball America's first-team All-American after hitting .448 with nine home runs and 45 RBI + freshman pitcher Jazzy Francik joined the All-Freshman team with a 1.57 ERA and a no-hitter against Virginia Tech. The awards come as the Seminoles prepare for their NCAA tournament series starting May 22 at the Seminole Softball Complex + game times will air on ESPN2.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • On May 15, North Florida Christian beat University Christian 11-8 in the FHSAA 1A Regional finals to advance to the state semifinals where they will face Evangelical Christian on May 20 — the Eagles took an early 2-0 lead and then surged in the third inning to build a strong advantage.  Tallahassee Reports
