COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Fort Braden Family Resource Center is collecting feminine hygiene products for Fort Braden K-8 School to help ease period poverty and improve attendance. Donations will continue through the summer (excess supplies may be distributed to other schools), ensuring students have the resources they need.  ABC 27

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Sprouts Farmers Market is coming to Tallahassee at 3111 Mahan Drive (the former Big Lots space in Lafayette Place Shopping Center), and local shoppers wait for more details on its opening.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Hopkins Eatery opened its fourth location at Bannerman Crossings Shopping Center (3431 Bannerman Road Suite 104) on May 20 at 11 a.m. It took over the former Rae's Restaurant site and continues to serve its signature sandwiches, salads and family-style dishes.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • The Tallahassee Flea Market at Motel 6 (2801 N. Monroe St.) risks closure after owners receive a $250 daily fine for code violations as organizers work with city officials to address local traffic and parking concerns raised by nearby residents.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • NextEra Energy plans to merge with Dominion Energy in a deal (meant to meet growing power demand) while keeping FPL rates fixed through 2029. Approvals are pending and the merger is expected to complete in 12 to 18 months.  Tallahassee Democrat

CULTURE NEWS

  • On May 20, hundreds gathered in downtown Tallahassee to reenact Lincoln’s proclamation reading, with children singing and a keynote from a FAMU professor. The celebration ended with a community picnic at Lewis Park that Mayor John Dailey joined.  WFSU
  • MercyMe announces its 24-date fall tour featuring guests Jeremy Camp, Tim Timmons and Sam Wesley, with a Tallahassee show set for Oct 10 at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center. Tickets start at ($108) and the tour ends Nov 15 in Minneapolis.  Tallahassee Democrat

HEALTH NEWS

  • Trulieve partnered with Stop Soldier Suicide and The Independence Fund to support veteran mental health during Mental Health Awareness Month at American Legion Post 13 in Tallahassee. The company (which employs over 175 veterans) aims to rebuild support networks for our service members.  Tallahassee Democrat

  • Lincoln baseball won the Class 5A state title with a 5-4 victory over Winter Springs on Wednesday, May 20 at Hammond Stadium. The underdog team earned its first crown since 2017 after a remarkable playoff surge.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Florida A&M baseball is in the SWAC Tournament in Birmingham. After opening against Texas Southern on May 20, the Rattlers are playing key games today as they aim to secure the title and an NCAA Tournament berth.  Tallahassee Democrat
