BUSINESS NEWS

  • A nationwide boycott of Walmart started on Tuesday, May 20 and will run until Monday, May 26 to protest the retailer's rollback of its DEI programs and rising prices. The boycott, organized by The People's Union USA, targets Walmart stores, online platforms, Sam's Club and its store brands, affecting nearly 330 local Walmart stores and 46 Sam's Club warehouses—actions that may impact Florida shoppers.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Most grocery stores will open on Memorial Day (Monday, May 26) with regular or modified hours while Costco will be closed (Aldi will have limited hours and Publix will operate with its pharmacies closed).  Tallahassee Democrat

  • Tallahassee police said a 5-year-old girl was found unresponsive on Monday at her home on the 4100 block of Kipling Ct and her mother and stepdad were arrested on child abuse and neglect charges—additional charges may follow pending autopsy results—.  WFSU Public Media
  • On May 21 at approximately 12:25 a.m., Leon County deputies responded to reports of gunfire on the 5100 block of Blountstown Highway and found a man with serious gunshot wounds who was taken to a local hospital while the investigation remains active (contact LCSO at 850 7437846).  Tallahassee Democrat

  • Del Suggs spoke in a studio on May 21 at 7:51 a.m. EDT to preview the 73rd Florida Folk Festival—he explained the key attractions and plans for the event—offering locals a clear look at what to expect.  WCTV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today the City Commission directed the City Attorney’s Office to start court action to foreclose code liens on the Washington Square project—fines over $413350 from environmental management and building code breaches have continued to grow. If the foreclosure goes through, the court will sell the property—with sale proceeds used to settle the fines owed to the city.  Tallahassee Reports

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The new Ridge Road Flats apartment community opened yesterday after local officials, including Mayor John Dailey, cut the ribbon on the 250-unit affordable housing complex. The units offer a pool, fitness room, and in-unit laundry (washer, dryer, balcony, granite countertops) while Elmington promises a 5% rent refund to residents who buy a home (after two years in good standing).  Tallahassee Democrat

  • Kaden Henderson, a top linebacker recruit and lifelong Florida State fan, took seven spring visits to teams including Florida State, Miami, Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, and USC — his first Division I offer came from his favorite school — and said Texas, Texas A&M, and LSU will visit him soon as part of his recruitment process.  Tallahassee Democrat
