  • Bishop John H. Ricard, a longtime leader who served the diocese from 1997 until his retirement in 2011, died at 86 on Wednesday at St. Joseph Seminary (Washington, D.C.). Funeral arrangements for his interment at St. Michael’s Cemetery in Pensacola will be announced soon.  WCTV

  • On May 22, the Florida SBDC at FAMU hosted CEO XChange for second-stage business owners to share peer learning and strategic advice, backed by Bank of America's funding+ support to boost local economic growth.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Growler Country reopens on June 12 at 8110 Killearn Plaza Lane in the former Pro Bank building next to Redemption Hill Church & Little Lambs Children's Center.   • Tallahassee commemorates Memorial Day with a ceremony at the National Cemetery today from 10 to 11 a.m. Additional tributes occur Monday at the VFW, Greenwood, and Oakland Cemeteries, while Leon County places wreaths and adjusts services for the holiday.  Tallahassee Democrat

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Leon County Schools’ legal memo confirmed that the district’s procurement process for a construction management contract meets Florida law and policy, setting the stage for the school board to consider awarding the contract to Rippee Construction at its May 26 meeting.  Tallahassee Reports

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A federal judge blocked new exempted fishing permits on May 21, so Florida officials allowed red snapper fishing in state waters with current bag limits and pledged to support local anglers amid confusion on opening day + the 39-day season runs from May 22 to June 20.  Tallahassee Democrat

FINANCE NEWS

  • Florida Lottery offered a $296 million Mega Millions jackpot for Memorial Day weekend with the drawing held Friday, May 22. Tickets have cost $5 each (since April 2025) as lottery odds remain very low.  Tallahassee Democrat

HEALTH NEWS

  • The BoatUS Foundation warns boaters to avoid overconfidence this Memorial Day weekend by urging them to wear life jackets and check safety gear (including engine cut off switches) before heading onto Florida waters.  Tallahassee Democrat

  • Sprouts Farmers Market has been confirmed for a new location at 3111 Mahan Dr in Lafayette Place (former Big Lots), near Goodwill, YouFit, and Kyoto. The store will open soon once an official date is set.  Tallahassee Democrat

  • Florida State baseball played Pitt in the ACC Tournament quarterfinal on Friday, May 22 at 3 p.m. at Truist Field in Charlotte + the winning team will face North Carolina or Virginia Tech in the semifinals on Saturday, May 23 at 5 p.m.  Tallahassee Democrat
