- ➤ The Legislature sent bills to Gov. Ron DeSantis last Friday that would ban cell phone use during the entire school day for elementary and middle school students and start a pilot program in six counties for high schools. The bills also include a provision to make holding dogs outside during disasters a new third-degree felony offense after a dog was found tied to a fence during Hurricane Milton and later adopted by the Tallahassee Humane Society. - ➤ FSU scientists used cryo-electron microscopy to capture millions of images that revealed the 3D structure of sulfite reductase—an enzyme that converts sulfite into hydrogen sulfide, which causes rotten egg odors. This work, funded by the National Science Foundation, will help guide future studies on controlling sulfur reactions in both industrial and environmental settings. Florida State University
- ➤ Researchers at FAMU-FSU College of Engineering designed a liquid hydrogen storage and pump-free delivery system for a 100-passenger hybrid electric aircraft — the design uses hydrogen as both fuel and coolant to reach a gravimetric index of 0.62 — and they will soon build a prototype at FSU’s Center for Advanced Power Systems as part of NASA’s Integrated Zero Emission Aviation program. - ➤ Florida will invest in a new AI emergency alert system that will send messages through radio and the BEACON app ahead of hurricane season—officials say it will speed up alert delivery—to help keep residents safe.
