  • FSU’s hospitality professor Tarik Dogru explained that strong domestic tourism numbers this summer may hide financial strain plus families are choosing shorter, less expensive trips to manage tight budgets.  Florida State University

  • Clinical Professor Rima Nathan leads the Claude Pepper Elder Law Clinic at FSU where law students assist low-income seniors with estate planning and legal issues. This hands-on program offers real case experience and prepares future lawyers to serve the community — a vital skill amid rising long-term care costs.  Florida State University
  • Florida State University's Institute for Governance and Civics (IGC) will host the 2026 Florida Statewide Finals of the National Civics Bee® on Tuesday, June 30 at 4 p.m. at the Augustus B. Turnbull III Florida State Conference Center as local middle school students compete in a quiz of civics.  Tallahassee Reports
  • Tallahassee’s 9-year-old Khloei Jarrett, crowned Little Miss Florida HBCU Pre-Teen on May 19, will compete in the National Little Miss HBCU Pageant in Washington D.C. from July 10 to 12. Her platform, 'Preemie Strong: From NICU to HBCU,' shows her inspiring journey + dreams of attending FAMU.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • The Leon County School Board passed a measure (vote 4 to 1) on May 27 sending a proposal to raise teacher and staff pay to the county commission for the Nov. 3 ballot, letting voters decide if an extra $200 yearly from homeowners will boost pay and safety.  Tallahassee Democrat

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The National Hurricane Center’s tropical outlook shows no disturbances over the next two to seven days (tracking two tropical waves), and forecasters urge residents to prepare as the hurricane season begins on June 1.  Tallahassee Democrat

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tallahassee Police Department will hold its annual Memorial Ceremony today at 9 a.m. in front of TPD Headquarters on Seventh Avenue to honor fallen officers as part of its bicentennial celebrations. Seventh Avenue will close between Thomasville Road and North Monroe Street from 8:15 a.m. until the event ends.  FOX 49
  • Drivers on Centerville Road face overnight closures and planned detours as the city upgrades power lines and poles between Hodges Drive and Potts Road; work started on May 26 and will run through June 16 to strengthen the system against severe weather.  FOX 49
  • The Leon County Sheriff’s Office held an appreciation lunch yesterday at the detention facility — a gesture to honor nurses and other medical professionals during a care transition. The agency praised the team for ensuring continued care of detainees.  FOX 49

HEALTH NEWS

  • Nurses at Leon County Jail went weeks without pay after their provider YesCare faced financial challenges, putting pressure on their families. CFG Health has taken over and now pays the nurses while YesCare remains responsible for recovering the missed wages.  ABC 27

SPORTS NEWS

  • FSU softball junior shortstop Isa Torres was named the D1Softball National Player of the Year on Wednesday and became the first Seminole to earn the honor. Torres set school records with a .530 batting average, 16 home runs, and several other marks in a standout season.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Florida State’s NCAA baseball tournament regional, running from May 29 to June 1, has drawn 2-seed Coastal Carolina + 3-seed Northern Illinois + 4-seed St. John's, setting up a key matchup as the Seminoles aim to take advantage of one of the tournament's best brackets.  Tallahassee Democrat
